One of my favourite things about building @behindthedesignpod_ has been the people and brands who’ve wanted to be part of it. In August, we hosted an evening alongside @_adrianzip / @surfacegalleryaustralia , @novas.au , @est_lighting , and @made_by_block - and what I love about collaborating with incredible industry brands like these is that everyone genuinely wants to be in the room. There’s no hard sell. Just a shared belief that the industry is better when we share knowledge, open doors, and talk honestly about the work. On the night we welcomed panelists from @michael.drescher / @dko_architecture , @darcytck / @cerastribley , and @yvettemoulton / @rothelowman - and the conversations that happened were exactly why I started this podcast. Real ones. Honest ones. About what actually happens behind the design. If you’re a brand who wants to collaborate - let’s talk. This is exactly the kind of thing we love doing more of. A home can feel calm without playing it safe. Helen Street, Northcote, began with an exceptional material palette: warm timber joinery, natural stone, soft light and the original bones of a Victorian home reworked for modern family life. We treated the styling as part of the architecture’s final edit. Soft curves against clean lines. Low contrast. Texture with weight. Pieces selected to make the rooms feel lived in, not simply finished. That is the difference a design studio brings to a home: every layer belongs to the same story. Save this if it is your kind of calm. Bringing a distinct property to market? This is what restraint looks like when it is done properly. At Helen Street, stone, timber, soft texture and daylight do the heavy lifting. Our job was to give the architecture a lived-in feeling without interrupting its calm. Nothing competing. Nothing trying too hard. Just a home with a very clear point of view. Save this for the next time you need proof that a quiet palette can still hold a room. AI with clients in the design industry. At our recent Brisbane Behind the Design event at @surfacegalleryaustralia , I asked @michael.drescher , Partner and Architect at @dko_architecture , how he’s navigating AI with clients in the current climate. As AI becomes increasingly part of the design conversation, the challenge isn’t simply understanding the technology. It’s managing expectations, protecting the value of the design process and knowing where AI genuinely adds value. A little snippet from a bigger conversation around what’s really happening behind the design. Showroom: @est_lighting @surfacegalleryaustralia @novas.au @made_by_block

When the right detail doesn’t exist, you make it.The space called for a tile angle with a perfectly tailored look but nothing off‑the‑shelf met the standard . So we produced a custom powder‑coated piece, crafted to complement the surrounding finishes and disappear seamlessly into the design. It’s a small detail, but the right details are what bring the whole look together.
