Opening Night Lineup 🎥 Our opening night, in partnership with NYU, is focused on how music is used in filmmaking. honored to premiere @tastingheritagefilm at @vcmediaorg | Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on Sunday May 4th at 1:30 PM PST in person with the gem that is Emily Flynn! the experience of following @emilo0o0’s tenacious mind and heart during the most fragile time of her life was something that fueled me with her spirit during the making of the film and the lessons learned beyond. Flynn’s transcendent journey uses food as a conduit to reclaim the culture she lost as a Korean adoptee, while navigating the identity and convictions she must confront after the tragic loss of her sibling who was shot and killed during a mental health check. grateful for the empowering guidance and funding support from my doc fam at @kartemquin and the Zhao-Chen Family AAPI Voices Fund that made it possible for me to make it through production and helped refine the edits #ktqlabs. i can’t imagine a better support system for directing my first film than the doc community that raised me and taught me about ethics and thoughtful practices in documentary filmmaking 💘 this film could not have been finished without The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association @nyfacurrent @madein_ny 🙌💪as well as the NYC Artists Corps Grant that helped support the project in the middle of the pandemic. We made it!!! 🎬🏆 And it took a village… Our journey to the Oscars as first-time nominees for “I Am Ready, Warden” has been nothing short of incredible, and we are still overwhelmed with gratitude. As DP (Rafael Roy) and Co-Producer @kelineveteri (Kelin Verrette), we poured everything we had into this film. We are especially grateful to our director @smritimundhra and producer @maya_gnyp____ for their trust, vision, and belief in us on this project and our many collaborations. Your absolute dedication and leadership made it possible for all of us to be fully present and help capture this complex story in the most meaningful way. To our families, who have lamented our absence at many holidays but have supported us endlessly, to our brilliant colleagues @madebymoubayed @jentiexiera @dansadowsky @katie_birdseed @heringermarissa who gave this film their all. To the courageous participants who shared their truth. Of many epic experiences in ’24 the most unforgettable (and un-posted) was my bday voyage in October on the Clearwater with so many loved ones (who were forced to hoist the 2000lb mast and sing sea shanty’s) as we set sail down the Hudson under the George Washington Bridge. The @sloopclearwater is a 19th century replica Dutch sloop that was started by musician Pete Seeger over 50 years ago for environmental activism on the Hudson and today continues as a nonprofit doing youth climate justice programs in and around NYC. Here’s to more love and saving the world in 2025 🌍✊🏼⛵️
