Please join us on Wednesday September 23rd from 4-7pm at the New Wight Gallery Broad Art Center on UCLA’s campus for the opening of the 2026 New Wight Biennial: Fugitive Planning. The exhibition runs from Wednesday September 23 - Thursday October 8th, with a one time live performance by Fana Fraser on Saturday September 26th at 4pm. The performance will be followed by a conversation between Fana Fraser and Dr. Tiffany Barber. This international exhibition includes sculpture, video, painting, and performance from 17 artists representing 4 countries and countless identities. Fugitive Planning is the process by which we study, conspire and move toward new ways of being, outside and beyond the enclosure of neocolonialism and all of its violent means. We hope you will join us. This exhibition was conceived alongside the work of Fred Moten, Saidiya Hartman, and other scholars whose writings over the past 2 decades have illuminated the concept of fugitivity, a mode of being and thinking which remains more necessary than ever (see The Undercommons, Lose Your Mother, Venus in Two Acts). #TRANSITION Transition is this year’s theme and, at the same time, our method. We understand it as an in-between state: a suspension in the gap where the familiar has already receded, and the new is only beginning to take shape. For this program, we have selected films that capture the transitional state in all its diversity and indeterminacy. Despite the anxiety, emptiness, and stillness that often accompany transition, this in-between point brings with it a freedom from decisions, expectations, and inevitable endings. Watching a film is the perfect embodiment of this suspended state of body and mind — frozen in the gap between image and the outside world. We invite you to share this leap and pause with us, in the sweet state of in between — where you can let go of everything excessive and anticipate the way ahead. Curated by Ira Lomakina, Polina Trubitsyna, Daria Chernova, Eliza Timofeeva September 4, 20:30 Zavod Razin, Saint Petersburg Tickets for the program and day passes are available via the link in our bio!

Over at @hoodmidcenturymodern, we do this thing called 🔥🔥Mo Modern Mondays🔥🔥, and today we're introducing to some and repositioning to others, SOUTH LA. South LA has this insane global cultural influence. From the Olympics in 1932/84, to the entire aesthetic of NWA/Compton and rap music of the late 80’s and early 90’s. We saw this aesthetic take over TV, film, sports, EVERYWHERE! Esp the architecture.⁣ ⁣ LA during the mid 20th century saw the emergence of some of the worlds sickest architects, Richard Neutra, Paul Williams and one of my favs, John Lautner!⁣ ⁣ This time also saw the biggest mass migration of black people to LA, mostly coming from southern states looking for a “sweet life” (Yes, a Frank Ocean hood dropped Ladera Heights).⁣ ⁣ As soon as blacks started to arrive in these neighborhoods (Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, West Adams, etc) white folks started to jet. This white flight signaled a rather cool phenomena I like to call “Black Folks Introduction to Modern Architecture”. Surely not the 1st time we’d seen, designed or lived in Modern structures - but the sheer amount of influential and breathtaking modernism in South LA during the 60’s was very rare within black communities around the world.⁣ ⁣ In the years to come while watching movies, music videos, and the local news (Watts Riots to Boyz in the Hood) we’d see a shit load of Streamline Moderne, Art Deco, MCM, and Googie in places we identified as the “hood”. And you know what - that shit blew my mind. ⁣ ⁣ Today we're offering you the first look at a film we're calling OLYMPIC VILLAGE 2028, shot by @madehaste. Keep checking back to @watts.place Instagram Story today for our love letter to South LA, full story breaking later this year. ⁣ ⁣ (RIP: to all that have lost their lives. Esp our fallen brothers and sisters.) 🙏🏾 #moderdesign #artdeco #architecture
