Meet Elten F. Strand of the 550th Airborne Infantry Battalion, a specialized airborne unit formed to conduct glider operations in Europe. Elten, or “Sunny” as some called him took part in numerous operations after training in Italy including the taking vital roads and towns such as Le Muy, needed for the allies advancement in southeastern France. After this, “Sunny” Strand and his unit moved towards the Italian border, freeing towns and villages along the way. After heavy days of fighting he was sent to Albourne, England to get some rest in October.
When the Battle of the Bulge occurred, the 550th was called in along side with the 17th airbornes 194th Glider Infantry Battalion; They were ordered to take the village of Renuamont, about 10 miles away from Bastogne. On that morning of January 4, 1945 the valley was covered with snow, almost up to the waist. The 550th was able to reach the town of Renuamont, although a German combat troop consisting of 25 men were able to force the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment to abandon their positions north of Renuamont, allowing them to come in and open fire on the Americans.
Elten F Strand was one of this days casualties, along with 17 of his comrades. They are buried together today in the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. Elten F. Strand paid the ultimate sacrifice that day, and it is up to us, the next generation, to withhold the values he fought for.
Elten F Strand is a relative of next gen student @msprain_23 from our most recent Normandy program. @brendan_vdl , a Dutch native and next gen student from our recent battlefield return program to the Netherlands, recently visited Elten F Strand at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. Honoring him and doing research for his relatives. His research provided the information in the narrative above.
In the words of Maddi Sprain - “Thankyou @bestdefensefoundation for bringing dedicated and thoughtful people on program”. Veterans stories, like her great uncles, will always be heard thanks to the efforts of all the BDF family.

“Come on girls, we can do it!”

The ever-present spirit of Mae Krier never fails to make me smile. Through the Best Defense Foundation, she, along with nearly 50 WWII veterans, was invited to Normandy’s 80th Anniversary of D-Day.

Forever a part of our history, she amongst 18 million other women, stepped into jobs prior to the war women were not allowed to have. They built the planes that were flown, fit the ships that sailed, and crafted the American bullets that were shooting through the air on June 6th, 1944. Without her contributions, the war might have looked really different. It was with their support, General Eisenhower recollected, that the war was wrought.

Thank you Mae, and thank you to the millions of Rosies who stepped up to keep the United States running during the perilous years of WWII.
