Bistro table our group developed while visiting @burrencollege. This project was different from any we’ve done prior because it focused chiefly on function and structure vs form development. Overall I found working a lot more in the shop to be rewarding and eye opening when considering designs to move forward with.

Visual character - BOLD

Our first project this semester focused on the visual character of three-dimensional forms, similar to the “heavy” project from last semester. This time, we were given an adjective (bold) and were assigned to apply it to a product: a clock

Over the course of a couple weeks, we developed iterations of concept sketches, prototype models, and clock-face designs to land on our final model for presentation. This prototype was made using acrylic, foam, oak wood, and copper detailing

Making shapes speak - “Heavy”

For this assignment we were given a block of foam, along with one word (heavy) with the goal of communicating that word through the form of the object.

Well-designed objects send intentional messages regarding their context, relevance, status, and use. This project continues to explore how to develop communicative forms, not only for establishing visual interest, but to send the viewer a one-word message
