Scent and memory. Beauty departments as scared spaces. Matrilineal intergenerational continuity. Feminine identity. Some themes I explore through my scent-based install as part of “Everything Must Go” - a group show curated by Ward 9 currently up at the Carrier Gallery until May 14.

Fragmented vignettes inspired by retail aesthetics and mall design provide the framework for this group exhibition. Artworks are part of themed ‘departments’ in intentionally sparse installations of commercial display, creating a nostalgic and sensorial atmosphere that addresses the loss of a distinct retail experience and social space; a modern day Roman ruin. Drawing reference from surreal set design of 1980s and 90s films, historical archives, advertising, and visual merchandising, this exhibition celebrates these traditional sites of consumerism as ritualistic and (unintentional) shared public space, while serving as a memento mori — a reminder of the transient nature of all things. “Everything Must Go” unlocks memories and provokes viewers to consider how the death of the department store and demise of mall culture has impacted modern human experience and our relationship with public space and consumerism, asking: what is lost when these spaces disappear?

WARD 9 is Stephanie Cianchino, Franco Deleo, Ariane Laezza, Michael Madjus, Patricia Ritacca, and Mark Savoia

✨ Look back at the Opening Reception of “Everything Must Go”.

Guests gathered on April 2 for the opening of this immersive exhibition curated by the WARD 9 collective, which transformed the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery into a haunting dreamscape evoking memories of shopping malls and department stores of the past.

📸 View highlights from the Opening Reception — see link in bio for the full album.

With artworks unfolding through fragmented vignettes and themed ‘departments’, the exhibition creates a nostalgic and sensorial atmosphere while inviting viewers to consider how the decline of mall culture has reshaped modern social life and our relationship with public space.

🖼️ This exhibition runs until May 14, 2026.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening night of “Everything Must Go” a group show curated by Ward9 at the Carrier Gallery. ❤️

It was my first time presenting @memoriesofthingstocome - my practice in experimental scent design. The installation pulled on familial elements and scent to reference
matrilineal lineages, recalling memories of perfume counters of the past. Found in beauty departments and primarily frequented by women, these were sacred sites to explore
feminine identity.

I created a custom scent inspired by my grandmother and memories of 90s era perfumes.

Memories of Things to Come is an exploration of
scent-evoked nostalgia and the power of
imprinting future memories through olfactory
experiences. 🌹

The show is on until May 14th at the Joseph D. Carrier Gallery inside the Columbus Centre.
