an incredible story:

My dad is turning 70 this year, and as a gift I thought it might be special to try and find out some information about his family tree. My dad and his twin sister were born in Germany in 1955 under the names Tristan and Etta Naumann. They were put up for adoption immediately, and subsequently adopted and raised in Colorado where their names were changed to Dennis and Denise Stevenson. Because he was adopted so young, my dad knew virtually nothing about his birth mom or extended family. The only information that we had about her was her birth date, past residence, death date, and name - Ursula Naumann. I took this information to Ancestry.com and got to work. My search was extended, but I wasn’t having much luck finding anything.

Maybe 5 years ago, my dad took a DNA test using Ancestry, and my mom tried to do the same thing that I was attempting, with no luck. A few matches with people, but most of them were 5th cousins too distant to trace to a potential parent. When I checked Dad’s DNA matches, he had one match that was labeled as a 1st or 2nd cousin - we’ll call him John. When I looked through his profile, he had mapped his family tree back to the 1700s. There were quite a few Naumanns in John’s tree, so I reached out to him to see if it was possible that Ursula, my dad’s mom, was related to them.

After a few days, John got back to me. He had spoken with his grandma and discovered that his great-grandma and my dad’s grandma were twin sisters - both Naumanns. The tree stuff is hard to follow, but basically this would make John’s grandpa cousins with Ursula. John’s grandma said that she remembered Ursula very well, and from here she was able to look for and find photos of my dad’s birth mom. This was the first time - at the age of almost 70 - that he had ever seen a photo of his mom.

This alone was the most exciting discovery possible, I had hoped to find a distant family tree potentially, and maybe learn more factually about Ursula, but we had instead found my dad’s actual extended family, with people who knew his mom, spent time with her, and remembered what she was like.

BUT IT DIDN’T END THERE!
