Maekaeda Gibbons started Brown Sugar Babe in 2018 with about $300 left after her bills were paid, roughly $54 of it on bottles. The fragrance company grossed $21 million in 2025 and has never taken outside investment. She put about $1.2 million into the construction, branding and grand opening of her Atlanta flagship in 2025, and about $5.5 million over three months on roughly two years of inventory and ingredients. “Ownership is permanent,” she said. The beauty of Brown Sugar Babe oils is their versatility and their ability to be worn without fragrances. Of course, I don’t wear fragrance without a body oil. Maekaeda Gibbons started Brown Sugar Babe with just $300 while working as a Bank of America loan officer in 2018. What began with experimenting with fragrance oils in her kitchen grew into a self-funded business that generated $21 million in gross revenue in 2025—without outside investors.
