Just sitting here reflecting on how powerful this group of people is. Almost 2 years ago I was accepted into the Land Access Fellowship with the National Young Farmers Coalition with 99 other farmers around the nation. Knowing these people and sharing life with them gives me hope for what’s to come.

Nearly half of all farmland is going to change hands in the next two decades and the average farmer is nearly 60 years old. This is wild! You know what else? We’re losing 2000 acres of farmland a day to development. Many young farmers are leaving agriculture because we cannot secure affordable land.

I want to build a better future with young and BIPOC farmers. We need affordable, equitable and secure land access.

This #farmbill is our chance to address challenges we face. Tell congress to support land access for the next generation by joining the @youngfarmers campaign!

We are urban farmers. We are beginning farmers. We are young farmers. We are first generation farmers.

This past weekend I convened with my peers in ATL. We discussed our victories, future projects and our hurdles. Farming looks different for each of us but one thing that remains the same is that we are all experiencing some of the same hardships when it comes to acquiring land, accessing capital and our qualifiers or lack there of for certain USDA programs.

Here in Detroit, we’re fortunate enough to be an awardee of @detroitblackfarmerlandfund (a community organization that raises funds to assist urban BIPOC farmers with acquiring land from the Detroit Landbank Authority). Through this organization Workin’ Roots was able to purchase the lots we’re currently growing on. We’re also a member of the Detroit Farmer Collective (an up and coming collective of farmer resources & tool sharing hubs). DBFLF and DFC are the types of organizations that would benefit most from the Increasing Land Access, Security and Opportunities (LASO) Act.

Some priorities of the LASO Act include but aren’t limited to:
-securing affordable and equitable land access opportunities.
-securing young and BIPOC farmer representation on decision making committees
-directing funding to projects that support land access for BIPOC farmers

We need equity and inclusion for land access so we’re calling on members of Congress to ensure this by passing the LASO Act.
