Sutra 4.3 : By the overflow of natural potentiality occurs the transformation from one substance (or birth) into another.
*
निमित्तमप्रयोजकं प्रकृतीनांवरणभेदस्तु ततः क्षेत्रिकवत्
nimittamaprayojakaṁ prakr̥tīnāṁvaraṇabhedastu tataḥ kṣetrikavat

“The various sadhanas and method of obtaining sindhis are not the real instrumental cause of awakening the potentialities. No sahana or spiritual practice can have a direct effect, but the transformation brought about is indirect, by fulfilling certain conditions of prakriti. Just as a farmer irrigating a field removes the obstacle so the water can flow of its own accord through the canals, similarly, these sadhanas remove the obstacles in the way of prakriti, and thus prakriti does the rest of the job of its own accord. The sadhanas work only indirectly.
The spiritual practices bring about a transformation in the order os consciousness, or chitta. The obstacles preventing the aspirant from observing his true nature and reality have first to be removed. Sadhanas are meant for this purpose…
… They are very powerful methods of removing impurities from the passage of consciousness and creating a free passage for the divine nature to act unhindered.” -FCOF, Swami Satyananda Saraswati
