POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For my German-speaking friends:

I recently had the pleasure of joining Andreas Liebold on the @radiobielefeld podcast Liebold Live.

We talked about my work as an illustrator for brands and organisations such as Coca-Cola, FC Bayern Munich, and the German Government, and also about some of the pivotal moments along the way.

One of those stories was my trip from Sydney to Beijing in 2011, where I wanted to discover how people on the other side of the world create and design (and how ignoring my gut feeling on the very last day of that journey led me into quite a tense situation).

A big thank you to Andreas Liebold for the wonderful conversation and for asking such thoughtful and unexpected questions.

If you’d like to listen, you can find the episode in the bio.

This illustration is inspired by David Airey, who writes in his book Work For Money, Design For Love:

“If you keep bending and bending to suit clients’ demands, something will inevitably break.”

A client might ask us
– for a lower price
– to do more work than initially agreed
– to deliver earlier than discussed
– to grant more usage rights for free

So we bend.

And bend.

Until something breaks.

Our motivation.
Our credibility.
Our clients’ trust.
Or, eventually, our business.

If a client request feels uncomfortable, we basically have two options:

A closing “No.”
Or an opening “Yes, but…”

“No” is not rude. It is honest, competent, and professional.

“Yes, but…” opens the door to a fair solution.

Reliability starts with honest communication. And to a good client, it is worth far more than shaky concessions.

Just one more reel. One more game. One more email.

Too often, “just one more” is where our best ideas and intentions die.

I don’t know if we need more discipline in life or a whole new mindset to deal with the omnipresent threat of distraction.

All I know is that the moment I create and build, I become immune to all the noise and “bings.”

Call it being in the zone, locked in, or in the tunnel. Whatever we call it, I’m convinced that:

Focus is the antidote to distraction.

Like a curious child playing with toys, we merge into the process and forget everything.

We forget to eat, drink, doubt, and question ourselves.

We make.

That’s a wonderful place to be.

And sometimes we forget that we can go back to that place at any time.

All we need to do is slow down, seek solitude, and let our hands speak.

Behind the visual:
This illustration is inspired by @thechrisdo, who writes in his book A Pocket Full of Do:
„Deadlines create pressure. Pressure creates focus and eliminates distractions.“

⁣

-RED FACT: The heart sends more signals to the brain than the #brain sends to the #heart. This can influence things such as emotions & decision-making. This can be why intense emotions such as love or fear can feel overwhelming.
