“Everything is Fair 2.0”, oil, acrylic, shredded car tire, on wood panel, 36 x 48”. Here’s the final version of this painting. I’m happy with the decision to open up the lower left corner and create a stronger sense of her silhouette. I also ended up digging the textural contrast created by the lighter value paint over top (see video). Touched up her face as well. Scroll back a ways for original version… and a few posts ago there’s a little story of “Artist OCD” that I can relate to. 😅 Thanks again to my amazing friend @majorrsmith 🌟 for posing! #EverythingisFair #ATribeCalledQuest #newyorkportraits #unityindiversity #representationmatters #OneLove

A painting from a few years ago landed back in my studio - of course my OCD took over and I had to start making adjustments. (Notes are in blue.) If I see room for improvement on a painting I have to scratch that itch 😅… It reminds me of a story about the famous post-impressionist painter Edgar Degas: Apparently he was invited over to a friend’s house for dinner. Degas had previously done a portrait of his friend’s wife, which the couple had proudly hung on display in their dining room. During dinner, Degas was noticeably uninvolved in conversation, not really eating much, and kept staring at the painting with a look of consternation. His friend finally asked him, “Monsieur Degas, are you alright?”. After a pause Degas mumbled something, put down his fork and knife, suddenly got up from his chair, snatched the painting off the wall and hurried out the door with it. On his way out he called back to his stunned hosts, “Sorry I’m taking this to my studio - I have to work on it !” and he was gone. 💨 I’m not sure at what point they ever got the painting back... but I can relate. 😂 #paintingobsession #portraitpainting #oilpainting #oilpaint #impasto #oilonwood #contemporaryportrait #representationmatters
