POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last week we had a great time at @make_architects for another Open Studio.

These events typically start off with a bit about the practice, the types of projects they work on and sometimes about their hiring processes. Make's insight into this is super interesting and whilst some may think AI has disrupted the recruitment pipeline, the team at Make are truly going through hundreds of portfolios themselves.

These graduates were incredibly keen and showed up and took a great interest, asking some good questions.

Thank you to the team at Make for hosting us again, and for their time, advice and insight.

Year 11’s from The City Academy Hackney explored unique and secluded spaces in The City observing and interpreting these as part of our URBANsteps programme.

We explored the Barbican Centre, investigated the Pedway Walkway system, visited secret pocket parks and found long lost remnants of buildings through time.

The students were brilliant and a big thank 🫶🏽 you to all of our hosts who facilitated the day, especially the Barbican Centre.

📣 URBAN STEPS is an innovative heritage and cultural walking trails programme combining active exploration and youth empowerment through architecture, art, and place exploration with creative skills development.

Supported by The City of London Corporation’s Inspiring London through Culture fund. Thank You 🙏🏼

Contact info@urbanlearners.org if you’d like to nominate your class or if you’d like to discuss the programme.

Just completed in the heart of Picadilly is the pioneering 30 Duke St. Proud to say, on time, on budget, whilst leading the way for a circular construction approach. To deliver such a building takes collaboration and commitment from the whole team.

On 1 October, mstep was six years old.

Six years ago I set up mstep to operate the way I love to live: #MEP engineers with no timesheets, no printers, and no one else's blueprint for success.

More than 90 commissions later, I am so proud of what we have delivered.

We have worked with clients from the United Nations and Frieze, to private homeowners, whose homes we have put on ground source heat pumps.

At Tickhill Road in Doncaster, we are part of the team moving an NHS mental health campus onto ground source energy: heat pumps in every building, more than 18,000 m² of existing estate decarbonised, and new wards designed towards Passivhaus. Targeting over 60% emissions reduction.

In Chelsea, we are part of the team behind the Sydney Street Heat Network, a ground source ambient loop beneath the streets that has just received planning permission.

For Paris Musées, mstep led the feasibility study for a new central collections store serving fourteen museums and nearly one million artworks: a highly insulated envelope, the ground slab as a thermal buffer, and ground source heat pumps.

Closer to home: the full reclad of a 24-storey residential tower in central London, the deep retrofit of an SEN school in Southwark and a new £10 million college facility in Shrewsbury.

None of it happens alone. Almost 20 people are, or have been, part of mstep, and many keep coming back. We are a flexible team of collaborators across every discipline, some of whom have worked together for almost 30 years.

The Paris Musées team brought together architects, structural engineers, building physicists, cost consultants and mstep, people who have worked alongside each other across different roles and lifetimes.

mstep is fortunate to work alongside some truly brilliant teams: Cagni Williams, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) , Make Architects , Maccreanor Lavington, WR-AP, Atomik Architecture , Genius Energy Lab (Ground Source Heat Pump System and Heat Network Designers)
Miltiadou Cook Mitzman , Peter Marsh Consulting , AHR, F J SAMUELY to name just a few.

This is the new way of working: collaboration, where everyone works together to succeed. Thank you to every one of you

There’s still time to submit your drawings for the #architecturedrawingprize! We’ve pushed back the deadline to Friday 25 September, to give everyone a little more time as we return to work/studies after the summer.

The Prize is an international competition that celebrates the significance of architectural drawing as a tool for capturing and communicating design ideas. It’s open to everyone, we accept digital and hand-drawn artwork, and there are multiple winners, with an overall winner announced in January 2027.

Even better than a trophy, selected winning entries are displayed in a dedicated exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum and at the World Architecture Festival in Fort Lauderdale, with coverage on the WAF website and in international media including @archdaily. All winners will receive tickets to the events.

Full details and the entry form are in the link in our bio.

The Architecture Drawing Prize is organised by @make_architects, @soanemuseum and @worldarchfest. Kindly sponsored by @irisceramicagroup

Pictured is the 2025 overall prize winner @sanjidah.yc’s trophy, featuring her ‘Shilpogram: A Crafter’s Village’ entry.

From nail bars to hair salons and from terraces - covered ideally, for year-round use - to basements packed with changing facilities that wouldn’t look out of place in a 5-star hotel, the great office amenity race is on. But has it all got a bit OTT? And, more importantly, is it commercially viable? Check out my latest Substack for more - link in bio.
