"...the effect when you see all the works together is that of a visual rhythm, a pulse of images. It helps that there's a lot of work too - Rhyming Couplets contains 35 paintings. Each a view from the Norfolk Plains, an area of cleared farmlands between the Central Plateau and Ben Lomond." - Andrew Harper

Many thanks to Andrew Harper for the wonderful and engaging review of Luke Wagner's exhibition 'Rhyming Couplets'.

'Rhyming Couplets' ends on the 09.03.26 and it's the final chance to see these works together in the gallery. And as Andrew perceptively notes in his review, there is a rhythm to be experienced in viewing the exhibition as a whole.

I have been reading a lot about the end of the world, apocalypses, and so on. This sort of sums that up, somehow. — Notes from Andrew

Albrecht Dürer, Die Offenbarung St. Johannis, Berlin : Amsler & Ruthardt, 1900, retrieved from: https://archive.org/details/gri_33125014730804/page/n21/mode/2up

🔗 Full 'reading list' online. Discussion event: 2pm, Saturday 27 September (free event). A screenshot of a page from website "Internet Archive". It shows a scan of a very old book, there are arrows showing that the the book is interactive and you can flip through its pages. The text underneath reads "Die Offenbarung St. Johannis". The pages are very yellowed. The left one is blank, and the right one shows a detailed, black line woodcut of a scene in a biblical style. There is a head in the sky with light rays behind it, and a man eating a book.

Thanks Andrew, for the wonderful write up about 177 Nations of Tasmania, and my personal contribution to the project.

“Andy Wilson is an excellent photographer with great skill, but in this project, he is profoundly sensitive to people as well.
His work is inquisitive and exciting, and he really manages to respect every single person here.

“Alongside Mark Thomson’s ability to give people space to tell their stories, Wilson has made everyone look amazing while also just being themselves - and that marks him as a terrific artist.

“177 Nations of Tasmania is a special project that continues to grow. While it is more than a collection of striking images, Andy Wilson does deserve to be noted as someone that knows what they are doing, and has a special flair for his subject that is quietly breathtaking.”

The Two Sorrows, (image) was part of a recent presentation in the octagon stables at VCA. A double portrait, a private then public portal pose of longing as she peers through the eyes of her son.

I’m done, take me home, bring him back.

Yesterday, along with beautiful handmade earrings from my son, I received another special gift. The writings of Andrew Harper in response to my works. When they sent me a draft to look through, with insightful questions, I was so elated that they had seen and understood what it is I am trying to do. Andrew writes about all the layers of meaning in my work, but also links to the opinions people have about what art should and shouldn’t be and what this stems from. Sincere thanks again Andrew @makeanddo_tas

If you aren’t a subscriber, and you can afford it I encourage you to do so. Not just because he has written about my work but because I believe we need big thinkers in the world, and people who critique the status quo.
