Year 5 @boutcher_ce_primary art project What Southwark Means To Me continued with a visit to @the_globe to sketch Benjy from Globe’s visitor operations. The rain might not raineth every day but the heavens opened as we met Harriet from the education department, who introduced us to Benjy.

Our Boutcher Primary School art project, What Southwark Means To Me is a journey of discovery where Year 5 pupils have encounters with 19 people from all walks of life who make an impact in our community. Empirical by design, pupils sketch in each location as they ask our participants about their sense of belonging and connection. Whilst sketching, they listen to participants' answers and consider their responses over time as they collectively make 19 paintings from their experiences.

Benjy had the demeanour & grace of an actor, and we were surprised to learn that he hasn't ever acted, but he has been working at the Globe for 25 years and knew everyone there. He spoke fondly of his friendship with Globe's former artistic directors Mark Rylance, Dominic Dromgoole, current director Michele Terry and Zoe Wanamaker, daughter of Sam, whose collective endeavours created this 'wooden O', gifting us shelter on a wet day.

Benjy had written a Shakespeare quote on his hand, from his favourite play, The Merchant of Venice. He recited it to us as the art crew sketched him,

'The quality of mercy is not strained;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives & him that takes'

Beautiful words from a man who studied the play at school in Nigeria before further studies in India and an eventual move to London in the late 1970s. We learnt how London became a home for Benjy, giving him a sense of belonging, alongside his work at the Globe.

Shakespeare's Southwark was buoyed by swift maritime passage to trade routes throughout the globe. His protagonists explore their sense of identity - personal, national & global. Shakespeare's Globe continues to bring his characters to life in new ways, to new audiences, at affordable prices 🙏

We’ll be the first to admit that our Halloween Songs & Smiles sessions have been more cute than
scary… 👻

From Stockport to Southwark, the old, young and all those in between embraced their characters as witches, bats, skeletons and many a pumpkin.

In the years we spend as parents of young children, it’s easy to feel weighed down by the added responsibilities and costs of seasonal celebrations (think outfit planning, buying, organising social events…. We know you know!). But for those living in care homes, while they might not feel the weight of these roles anymore, they also might miss out on how spirit-lifting it is to see
the thrills young ones get out of such simple rituals. So bringing these little joys into care homes through our intergenerational music and movement sessions is an easy win for all involved ✨

We start sessions again next week - hope to see you there! 🌚

Hope you all have a happy Halloween! 🎃

It's fair to say I do like beer. As our finest visual chroicler of London life, William Hogarth himself, wrote on one of his most famous engravings, Beer Street, 1751,

'Beer, happy Produce of our Isle
Can sinewy Strength impart,
And wearied with Fatigue and Toil
Can cheer each manly Heart..'

Times have changed for the better, and it was a great pleasure to meet brewers Jess and Izzie from @thekernelbrewery on Spa Road, proof that all hearts are cheered by the taste of good beer these days, not just manly ones.

This was almost our last drawing trip for our @boutcher_ce_primary Made In Southwark art collaboration celebrating the working life of Southwark, and we were so glad that the Kernel Brewery invited us in to draw them at work and learn about the brewing process.

Jess and Izzie talked us through the chemistry of brewing excellent beer, with only a few ingredients, while we sketched. Izzie showed us the mash for the chocolatey stout she was brewing up as Chris sealed up casks ready for distribution to @thekernelsparoad & other London venues.

Southwark's brewing heritage goes back way before Hogarth's time. I'm sure the abbots that gave their name to Abbey St.were mashing malt like there was no tomorrow. The Anchor Brewhouse by Shad Thames was established in 1787 by John Courage. The Hop Exchange in Borough is another remnant of a time when hard manual graft made for thirsty dockers, porters, and lightermen.

The disused Spa railway terminus that now houses Kernel Brewery would've been used to bring hops in from Kent. Indeed, holidays for many Southwark residents often revolved around hop picking work in Kent, picking the hops they'd end up drinking when they were back home in London.

It's heartwarming to see modern-day Southwark represented by high-quality breweries emerging in the last 15 or so years. The reawakening of our brewing heritage has even led to the creation of the world famous Bermondsey Beer Mile.

We also met mushroom Mike @the_wild_room

The last two sketches are by Sally @makitsew who joined us on our trip. Thanks to Sally & everyone at The Kernel who made our trip so special 🙏 🍻 🎨

When one intergenerational project inspires another… 💫

In Autumn 2024, our wonderful Songs & Smiles leader and artist Sally Taylor joined Everyone Lends A Hand - an intergenerational arts project led by artist Ed Gray at @boutcher_ce_primary in partnership with Appleby Blue Almshouse and United St Saviour’s Charity

Over three months, Year 5 pupils and the older residents sketched, painted, and bonded over stories, scenes of daily life, and joyful moments, including our very own Songs & Smiles sessions! 🫧🎶

The resulting artworks were first shown at Appleby Blue, and then three paintings were selected from 23,000+ entries for the #RAYoungArtists #RASummerExhibition at @royalacademyarts - incredible right?! Among them: Babies, Bubbles and Biscuits by Mina Frankenburg-Selby which was inspired by a Songs & Smiles session.

Mina’s painting is now up for the People’s Choice Award! Please help to celebrate intergenerational joy through art by voting for her 🧡

Getting a sneaky peak from the artist himself, Julian Perry’s Foliate Bosses, the new art show opening tomorrow @snapemaltings.
It runs until the end of June, so plenty of time to get up close and appreciate just how amazing it is with music too.

We are delighted to welcome David Calvert to the Fisherman’s Hut gallery soon ….

David Calvert is an international award winning photographer based in Middleton. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Photographic Society and the British Institute of Professional Photography. He gained public recognition through his portraiture, but since relocating to Suffolk two years ago, he has created a collection of landscape images that he will be exhibiting at the Fisherman’s Hut from 9th-15th May.

Titled Suffolk Skies, the exhibition showcases striking landscape photographs of Aldeburgh and the surrounding areas - many of which feature the dramatic skyscapes for which Suffolk is renowned.

All images on display will be available to purchase as beautiful fine art prints and greeting cards.
