Lighting design doesn’t start with choosing lights.

It starts with deciding what deserves attention - an artwork, a material, a piece of joinery, a table, a path through a space.

Then where the light should come from.
And just as importantly, what can be left alone.

Only then does the fitting become the decision.

Design the light first. Specify the fitting second.

The finished photos only show half the story.

Behind every one of these projects is a lighting plan shaped around the architecture, the people who live there, and how the home needs to feel and function.

Different homes. Different briefs. Different decisions.

Behind the Lighting Plan is a look at the thinking you don’t always see in the finished photos - and why no two lighting plans should ever be the same.

Welcome to the first Behind the Lighting Plan.

Instead of only showing the finished photos, I wanted to share the thinking behind them.

This series breaks down the design decisions that shaped the lighting throughout this home, showing how every choice influences the next to create a cohesive result.

Every home is different, so every lighting plan should be too.

If you’ve ever wondered why a lighting plan is so much more than choosing where the downlights go, this series is for you.
