I wanted to formally kick off Halloween season by honoring an absolute legend.
As a devout fan of Creature from the Black Lagoon, it only makes sense to showcase his creator.🎨
More importantly, I am part of the group of desperate fans who hope to reach everyone in the greater horror community & beyond about her legacy.

Milicent paved the way for a long line of women in horror & monster makeup; though her story is not a fairytale. It, in its own right, is a horror story.
One that so many of us can relate to.

I ask you to take a minute to learn about her today & if you feel the connection to her that I do, please read the talented @malloryomeara book titled The Lady from the Black Lagoon. Easily in my top 3 books of all time. She really did right by Milicent’s story.💚

I hope I did her justice in my own love letter to her, this look!

Here is the look in color! This was such a simple makeup in its application but felt huge in the way of honoring an icon.
I hope I did her justice with this look!✨

I knew that Milicent had to be my first look of this Halloween season because I have never related to someone more. Her story changed my life and the way I see my art, forever. I heavily annotated my copy of this book & knee right away that it was time to honor her. Thank you Milicent for being such a role model for ghouls like me.🖤 (also- there is zero editing on these pictures whatsoever because I felt like it was more accurate to the time.🖤)

Books:

“Off with Her Head” by @eleanorhermanauthor
This was one of the first books in this category I read, and I loved it. I devoured it. It became my whole personality.

“Girly Drinks,” by @malloryomeara
I read this book while I was actually a bartender, and it struck such a chord with me. We don’t think of alcohol as inherently sexist, but the way women have been treated, as it pertains to alcohol, has been just that. This book covers the HISTORY of alcohol surrounding women, why things are even deemed “girly” drinks (the reason enraged me), and how even today the world of professional bartending is yet another world difficult for women to break into. And, O’Meara is a raging badass.

“Jokes to Offend Men,” by Allison Kelley, Danielle Krause, Kate Herzlin, and Ysabel Yates.
The title tells you everything you need to know 😅 it truly is spectacular. Hilarious. Perfection.

“How to Piss off Men,” by @kyleprue
This is the only I’ve included written by a man (not that I’m opposed, so if you’ve got recs, drop ‘em!). It goes along with the “Jokes to Offend Men” and I truly think their combined powers would be unstoppable.

“Men to Avoid in Art and in Life,” by @nicsigni_writes
It’s just flipping hilarious.

Now, I haven’t read anything by O’Meara I didn’t like, but holy cats was this a read! Happy to report that I finished it this morning, International Women’s Day, albeit unplanned that way. I thank my brilliant library for knowing exactly when to send in my holds.

You should read this book if you’re into:

1. American history - of the land & peoples
2. Early Hollywood and how it’s progressed to modern day
3. Film
4. Independent women
5. Suffrage
6. Humanism
7. Cheats of death
8. Laughing
9. Education
10. Fantastic wit

I was yelling, “fuck yes!” damn near every other page. And even through all the bullshit, we (women) rule! This book gave me hope for my own future even within our current political climate. Things are ever changing, so we mustn't lose hope, Helen wouldn’t want us to.

Another important bit of advice about this book: read every footnote - you will not be disappointed. Where my other favorite quote in the book is hidden: “Shout out to everyone else who is best at “reading on the couch.”
