🐴 What can a horse bring to therapy that a traditional therapy room sometimes can’t?

I asked Melanie Dominko-Richards, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) @manestreamnj , this question in my latest Behind the Reins interview, and I loved hearing her examples!

From asking Snappy to “go” or “stop” to practicing everyday skills like brushing his mane, horses can make therapy more engaging, meaningful, and fun. 💛

One thing that really stood out to me was how horses can help clients find their voice, build strength, and communicate in ways that might not happen in a traditional setting.

It’s amazing to see how the connection between humans and horses can create so many opportunities for learning and growth!

Hey Tewksbury! Nora is here with Tewks Tails! This Sunday, October 25th, Mane Stream in Oldwick is hosting its Fall Horse Show from 8am to 5pm. Mane Stream’s horses help kids and grown-ups with special needs learn to ride, and everyone is invited to come cheer them on! Plus a safety tip for hikers: it’s deer season. Bow hunting is allowed in some township parks through October 30th, but there’s no hunting on Sundays, so check before you hike. Stay pawsome, Tewksbury! #TewksNewsTeam #TewksburyNJ #TewksTails #ManeStream #HorseShow

He said ONE word. And it changed everything. 🐴💚

At first, Melanie Dominko-Richards was just a six-year-old girl who loved horses. Her mom sent her to summer camp at what was then Somerset Hills Handicapped Riding Center. Little did she know, it would shape Melanie’s entire future.

Years later, while volunteering in the arena, Melanie witnessed a moment she would never forget.

A little boy who had never spoken a word was riding a pony named Sweetie. Suddenly, he looked at Melanie and said…

“TROT.” 🥹🐴

The team was stunned. His mom was crying outside the arena. And the little boy? He wanted to trot again. And again. And again.

That one word became the beginning of something extraordinary.

Today, Melanie is a speech language pathologist at @manestreamnj and the past president of the American Hippotherapy Association @theahainc . She currently works for an organization called @ourhousenj j, helping others experience the possibilities of equine-assisted services.

💚 Sometimes, a horse creates the connection that words cannot

💚 Sometimes, one moment opens the door to a lifetime of purpose

💚 And sometimes, a little pony named Sweetie helps change a life

At Gentle Gallop, we believe stories like Melanie’s remind us why raising awareness about adaptive riding and equine-assisted services matters.

🐴 Have you ever witnessed a moment when a horse made a difference in someone’s life? Tell us in the comments 👇

What a wonderful night at Mane Stream’s EQUUS XXXIV, Boots, Buckles & Bourbon, at the Ryland Inn. It was great to be back again this year and help raise money for such an important cause. From its farm in Oldwick, Mane Stream uses horses to help children and adults with special needs build confidence in the saddle and heal through horse-powered therapy with New Jersey–licensed therapists. Grateful to be part of an evening that keeps that work going.

I got to spend last week with the awesome people and ponies at @manestreamnj 😊 Last October I was invited to be guest speaker at Mane Stream’s Equus Gala where I got a chance to share what the whole organization means to me, but in this clip specifically, why camp there is so special.
