Brian Eno × Kristjan Järvi - “And Then So Clear” ✨

Working with Brian Eno on Ships was an artistic milestone for me. Now, a moment from our London concerts is coming to YouTube.

Brian invited me to develop the orchestral interpretation of The Ship, exploring how orchestral instruments could inhabit his distinctive sound world.

Together with the musicians of Baltic Sea Philharmonic, we explored new ways to play, listen and create. Performing entirely from memory, the musicians responded to one another in real time, using their instruments in unconventional ways. A shared musical language, shaped in the moment. 🎶

Our final concerts at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 30 October 2023 brought Brian’s first-ever solo live tour to a close.

That spirit of discovery continues in my work with Nordic Pulse, expanding what orchestral instruments and collective performance can become.

Record Store Day is a curious one. Once upon a time, I’d queue outside the Rough Trade record shop in Brick Lane in the darkest early morning to ensure I could pick up the vinyl gems I was searching for, but these days I just wait until the following day when shops are allowed to sell left over stock. I was delighted to pick up this new edition of Brian Eno’s “Small Craft on a Milk Sea” (2010) with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams, which features an entire unreleased LP of material. It’s a chance to hear bonus material recorded at the time, as well as the complete Seven Seas Sessions. I’ve also enjoyed this album too, with its sense of drift, a kind of movement with destination. Tracks just appear and then dissolve, almost as if the music is uncertain whether to settle or just keep drifting. The ’new’ material extends this into freshly tranquil waters.
