WHERE I BUY MY BOOKS
*places to buy books if you don’t want to support Amazon*
.
.
I often get asked where I buy my books, I really try to avoid Amazon when I can(I’m not perfect!), as it’s well known the damage they do to small and independent book stores as well as on authors and publishers by creating a near monopoly and selling books at such low prices. I have a few go to online book sellers/ resellers, as well as local stores and of course borrowing from the library. My favorite source has to be @blackwellbooks with their reasonable prices and free international shipping, but I also adore @pangobooks for their used books and @bookshop_org for their new release books. I also always get asked where I buy my @nyrbooks and I recommend buying them directly from the source on their website, watching for their yearly 40% off sales you won’t find on Amazon. Lastly I always rec the @libby.app that I place on my kindle (I know I still have an old kindle @kobobooks plz sponsor me😅) but Libby allows you to borrow books from your local library rather than purchase through Amazon.

book review: After You’d Gone by Maggie O’Farrell
.
.
page count: 384 pages
genre: literary fiction, generational tale, historical fiction (contemporary?)
.
.
notes:
A multigenerational tale about Alice, her mother and her grandmother - with a scattered timeline touching on her grandmother’s young adulthood, her mother’s university years and Alice before and after she ends up in a coma after a tragic accident that occurs after she witnesses an act she cannot bare.

.
thoughts:
This is my third Maggie O’Farrell, after I simply loved Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait, but this one is a different feel, less historical and slightly more modern and Maggie’s debut novel, I really didn’t know what to expect. Well, I simply adored it, possibly even more than her other work. Maggie never disappoints. The scattered timeline took a minute to get adjusted to, but after that I was simply addicted to Maggie’s emotional telling of these three women. Maggie writes in a way that fully engulfs you into the emotions of the story, her characters are complex, but strong and compelling women, her words flow beautifully. I truly believe I’ll love everything she writes, but this story really stuck with me. It felt life affirming, touching on so many things but not in a scattered way but a way that felt like living. It spoke of love, lack of love, motherhood, complex mothers, sisterhood, trauma, passion, humor, and death. It’s a wildly impressive novel, a book I think deserves more hype and praise in this online community.
