Coming to college with a 100% "set-in-stone" career plan? Take a note from recent graduate Mariah Thomas: sometimes the best path is the one you never saw coming.

Mariah arrived at the University of Montana, dead set on political science, studying for the LSAT, and heading straight to law school. But because she chose to treat her college years as an open door for exploration, she wound up landing her absolute dream career... and spoiler alert: it did not include law school.

By intentionally pairing her political science studies with a journalism major, Mariah used hands-on experiential learning to test-drive her ambitions:

📰 In the Student Newsroom: Mariah spent three years on-staff at the Montana Kaimin, climbing the ranks to copy chief.
🏛️ At Capitol Hill: She was partnered through UM’s Baucus Leaders Program to intern in Washington, D.C., for a U.S. Senator.
🌏 In the Global Classroom: Mariah managed an international web series at the Mansfield Center and traveled to Northern Ireland with Journalism Abroad.

Today, she's back home in Montana, working as an award-winning political reporter for the Flathead Beacon!

So what can you take away from Mariah's story? Don't let a pre-planned track stop you from discovering what you actually love. Tap the link in our bio to read Mariah's full story and learn how you can use campus internships to stress-test your own major!
