I’m feeling very contemplative today. I realise that in five days @werner.theron95 and I will be waking up in Germany - a place we’ll call home for the next while.

I’m feeling incredibly sad about the family, friends, mountains and fynbos I’m leaving behind. I realise I won’t just be able to stroll on Table Mountain with @balletninja182 to go look for the Disas, or rough it out on an ill-explored mountain with @marianoliver to find a rare Protea. We won’t be able to go for morning Yoga and breakfast in Stellenbosch with @vernonvisser and @schalk.schalk . I won’t be able to visit my family in Hoekwil on a whim or work in @koiosify 's garden. This will be the first year in probably eight where I won’t be germinating and growing Proteas, or visiting Springstygbeugel to see the Gladiolus cardinalis. So, I’m definitely feeling sad about everything that’s being left behind.

That being said, more than anything, I’m excited about the adventure that’s lying ahead for me and @werner.theron95 . A whole world is opening up for us this year and I’m so excited to be able to explore and discover it together. I guess my content will feature less Proteas and fynbos, but I’ll do my best to keep it interesting ☺️

Protea stokoei🌱 One of the most beautifully elegant proteas you can find. Growing on mountain ranges in the Cape Floristic Region, it is endangered and a real special to see.

We saw this guy as part of our 4 day botanising hikes when we took part in the City Nature Challenge on Inaturalist (Google it). We, together with over 1000 other observers helped Cape Town win several categories against other cities in the world. We also recorded a new buchu that has not been documented on INat yet.

All and all, it was 4 days of fun, laughter and a lot of sweets, while we explored places that very few people ever will have the privilege to go.

One of the most beautiful plants that very few people will ever have the privilege to see. Mimetes hottentoticus🌱 Part of the Protea family and is restricted to very high, steep and damp slopes of Kogelberg.

[When visiting these beauties, care must be taken to sterilise your boots before approaching them and not to get close to the stems(>1m)]

Gladiolus cardinalis🌱. Blooming in a sea of red in the waterfalls of the Western Cape. To get close to these guys can be tricky and makes for a fun adventure.

They are commonly called the new years lily and is primarily pollinated by the mountain pride butterfly (seen in picture 3). Each year at the start of January we take on Slanghoek peak in Bainskloof to see these beautiful flowers.

The most amazing weekend one can have in the mountains. Massive rock pools. Frightening views. An epic peak. And lots of coffee and laughter in the morning mist. Bainskloof is a real special place, shared with real special people.

The reason we go every beginning of the year is Gladiolus cardinalis🌱 and a post didicated to this red beauty will follow.
