One of my favorite places to be. 🧀

I get to work at @vanhookcheese sometimes, and every single time I'm reminded why this shop is something special. The counter is stocked with intention — nothing generic, just really good cheeses, cured meats, and other gastro groceries — chosen by people who actually care.

This weekend was a good one behind the case! And as if I needed more proof that Van Hook attracts my kind of people — I looked up and @mariefromage was standing there. We've been cheese friends online for years. First time meeting in real life. Of course it happened here.

If you're in NJ and you haven't been, fix that.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK #NYFW Some cozy newish places to check out this season:

- @latetedorbydaniel - Excellent cocktails like this botanical martini, and walk-in seating in the lounge area. The steaks are great. Lounge is a little more chill than the formal dining room - both are Art Deco gorgeous.

- @bufon.nyc More Frenchness! Neighborhood feel but a sophisticated vibe on the LES. Don’t skip the picanha steak or the wine. Pretty crowd.

@cafezaffri Middle Eastern all-day cafe near Union Square. Love the pastries especially the fried pancake with Arabic cheeses, orange and honey. They also have huge pots of hot tea.

@seahorsenyc in the renovated W Union Square. Another nice place to snag a seat at the bar for cocktails and crudo.

@smithereensnyc for the more adventurous seafood eater. Funky BBQ mackerel, abalone skewers and a can’t-miss smoked bluefish with buckwheat pancake.

Thanks to @mariefromage for several of these recs!

When two seasoned cheese pros team up, you know the results will be delicious. But add in Aaron Kirtz —a music industry DJ — and Leigh Friend — a pastry chef-turned-cookbook author — and you’ve got something even more creative. That’s the vibe at Wheelhouse Cheese & More in Maplewood — part gourmet shop, part hangout and sometimes even a dance party to get your groove on!
