50 YEARS AGO TODAY.

“We were crazy kids…”
- @breezerbikes

Before mountain biking had an industry, it had a hill.

GARY FISHER

Repack was a race.

It was also a testing lab.

Old Schwinns. Gears. Drum brakes. Motorcycle parts.

Gary recently recalled a line that pretty much captures the spirit:

“This is exciting. This is dangerous, you’re getting close to death.” - @gary_fisher

JOE BREEZE
Won Repack 10 times.

Then he started asking a dangerous question:

What if the bikes were actually built for this?

THIS WAS NEVER A ONE-MAN INVENTION STORY.

It was a scene.

Riders. Builders. Photographers. Friends.

Comparing ideas at the top of a hill.

Then testing them on the way down.

Much of that improbable history now lives at the Marin Museum of Bicycling. @marinmuseumofbicycling

CHARLIE KELLY

The organizer behind Repack.

Alongside Fred Wolf, with a little encouragement from Alan Bonds, Charlie helped turn one question into a timed downhill race:

Who’s fastest?

The plan was to settle the argument.

It did not.

4:22

Gary Fisher’s Repack course record.

Fast enough that the number outlived the race.

And because eventually the race disappeared, nobody ever got to take it away from him.

1977. BREEZER #1.

Instead of adapting another old bike, Joe Breeze built one specifically for the job.

Then he raced it at Repack.

And won.

Today, Breezer #1 lives in the Smithsonian.

FIFTY YEARS LATER…

Some stories are better told from the place where they happened.

And, no spoilers, but we may have convinced one of these legends to point a bike down Repack one more time for NO HANDS.

“We were crazy kids… but we’re hitting fifty years now. It still seems like long ago, and it’s probably because I talk about it every day of my life.” - @breezerbikes

CHARLIE DIDN’T JUST HELP MAKE THE HISTORY.

He wrote it down while it was happening.

In January 1979, Bicycling published his story:
“Clunkers Among the Hills.”

A bunch of friends fooling around with old bikes were becoming part of cycling history.

FIFTY YEARS LATER, THE DUST STILL HASN’T SETTLED.

This is more than bicycle history.

It is American ingenuity. Recreation. Transportation. Rebellion. Pop culture. Memor

Before Betrayal, there was a remarkable creative connection.

In 1989, director Carey Perloff worked alongside legendary playwright Harold Pinter in New York, developing a relationship with his work that would span decades.

These rare photographs, captured by Tom Chargin, offer a glimpse into their time together during rehearsals at Classic Stage Company and with the cast of Pinter’s The Birthday Party.

Now, Perloff returns to Pinter’s world as director of Betrayal at Marin Theatre—a riveting exploration of love, memory, and deception, told in reverse.

It all begins in THE THEATRE.

From the stage to the screen, Michael Douglas reflects on how his early experiences in theatre helped shape his career as an Academy Award-winning producer.

In conversation with Marin Theatre Executive Artistic Director Lance Gardner, Douglas reminds us that the influence of live theatre extends far beyond the stage.
