How much of your performance comes down to what you do before the workout even starts?

In this issue of The Brute Brief, @heycoachmatt talks about how to mentally prepare for the hard parts of a workout, build a warm-up that sets you up for the work ahead, and improve your aerobic engine.

@markcullenn also contributes with how Emma Lawson took her 5K from 21:40 to 19:30 while continuing to train CrossFit.

Plus a personal reflection on coaching, ambition, and learning from your mistakes.

If you want to get more out of your training, subscribe to The Brute Brief for in-depth insights, behind-the-scenes looks at Brute athletes and coaches, and a closer look at how @heycoachmatt and the rest of the Brute coaching team thinks about training, performance, and the sport of CrossFit.

One of the great snippets from this pod with Mark where he mentions the power of assigning extrinsic and intrinsic metrics to athletes running piece to give you a more holistic view of your performance.

Pair this with specific session feedback relating to what limited you such as " breathing felt chaotic" or "legs felt heavy" can give your coach even better insight in how to adjust the sessions in the future.

Check out the full episode through following the link in my bio.

We are in a fortunate place at present in the CrossFit space where many of the best coaches are willing to share their insights and processes I think this alone will significantly snowball what progress looks like for the sport in the coming years and I am excited to have more of this conversations.

💡 Discipline leads to habits, habits lead to consistency, and consistency leads to growth !

You don’t reach your goals because you worked out this week or meal prepped a couple times..

You get there by making the small decisions every day… choosing to stay committed, even when the motivation fades !!

Success is not built overnight, it is built through repeated daily actions and doing them even when you don’t feel like it 🔥

Join Coach Mark for a live, interactive mentorship session designed to explore how energy-system principles translate into program design and practical coaching application.

Coach Mark's mentorship sessions are live mentorship calls, not passive webinars. Come ready to learn, participate, ask questions, and engage with Coach Mark and the group.

Each session is sold separately from the 10-week coaching mentorship program, and participation in the full 10-week Brute Mentorship is not required.

Definitely the hardest thing I did last week & it wasn’t even close @crossfitgames 👋🏻😅

The ranch hills lived up to the expectation of misery that everyone described.
Quickly became an aggressive trudge rather than a run for the majority, but boy was it exhilarating.
——
@markcullenn had me running hills all summer so we felt well prepped for the challenge. But even with good preparation, it still hit me like a truck.
——
Check out some of my stats from the race on second slide. Those Aussie boys were cooking and I wanted to stay with them, so hence the Zone 5 for a majority of the race…
