What if your mission and values could give your team more confidence in making decisions?

Colin Watts describes a strong credo as a decision-making compass: something people can return to when the right answer isn’t immediately clear.

When Thorne developed its own mission, purpose, and values, Colin deliberately avoided creating them from the top down. The goal was to bring them out of the organization and distill them into something people could use.

One of the first questions a new leader should ask is: What are people actually expecting from me?

Colin Watts emphasizes the importance of staying connected with the stakeholders you’re responsible for delivering results to.

Get clear on their expectations early. As you dig deeper into the role, your understanding of the organization can change, and with it, what they need from you. That’s why Colin recommends asking the question again 90 days in.

Your work can feel different when you remember what you’re part of.

Mark reflects on a piece of advice he wishes he’d adopted earlier in his board and committee roles: “Be part of something bigger than yourself.”

It’s an important reminder that the way we frame our role can shape how we show up for the work.
