Liverpool photographer Mark McNulty is revisiting decades of British nightlife with In ‘Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’, a new photobook featuring 550 photographs documenting dance music, fashion and youth culture across four decades.

Drawing on an extensive archive of club nights across northern England and beyond, the collection captures the evolution of dancefloors from the early 1990s rave movement to the 2023 Eurovision celebrations in Liverpool. Its images offer a glimpse of an era before smartphones transformed nightlife photography, when clubgoers could dance without the constant scrutiny of social media.

McNulty began photographing Liverpool’s music scene at 14 before turning his lens towards the crowds at early electronic music nights, including Quadrant Park. His work later took him across the UK, documenting venues such as Cream and The Haçienda, alongside emerging dance music acts including The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk.

Beyond its recognisable names and iconic venues, the book also preserves fleeting moments featuring ordinary clubgoers, many of whom have since rediscovered their younger selves through McNulty’s photographs online.

In ‘Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’ will be published by Modernsky UK on 5th November.

His new book ‘In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’ brings together 550 rarely seen photographs spanning four decades of music, fashion and youth freedom. “There’s a lot to be said about living in the moment,” McNulty tells @crackmagazine.

We are 6.

Well, we’re actually 6 years and one week old, but we’ve been busy making plans and forgot to celebrate our birthday. Cog (the shop and gallery formerly known as Hub) has had a wobbly journey and actually started up during the pandemic. But we’re still here and it’s been a journey that we’re very proud of, so here are a few photographs from along the way. I think you’ll agree we’ve changed. But we’re still here and we’re open every day 12–4. See you soon.

years ago. It’s hard to explain the atmosphere of clubbing in the 90’s it was all about the fashion, the attitude, the creativity and of course the music. We planned every outfit to the last detail often making things ourselves right up the wire with a buzz of excitement. Not one night disappointed ever! We had a ball we thought would never end.
