The Hydra Bioreactor by @markos_designs transforms agroindustrial waste into biodegradable, three-dimensional materials grown directly by living systems. Using five innovative processes, from tidal growth to bacterial welding, the Hydra Bioreactor creates everything from wound dressings and footwear to sustainable packaging and textiles.

This project is a platform for regenerative manufacturing: modular, adaptable and scalable. It redefines making as cultivation, turning waste into input and materials into living collaborations.

It’a a vision of a future where design and biology grow together.

Imagine growing materials instead of manufacturing them.

As sustainability becomes a global priority, industries are seeking new ways to develop high-performance materials that use fewer resources, generate less waste, and offer greater adaptability.

In response, Markos Georgiou, a designer from the Royal College of Art, created Hydra Bioreactor, a modular system that grows 3D bacterial materials. Overcoming the limits of traditional flat forms such as bioleather and cellulose, it produces elastic, rigid, or waterproof materials 5–7 times faster than before. By converting food waste into valuable biomaterials, Hydra Bioreactor offers a scalable and sustainable solution with applications in healthcare, fashion, and aerospace, turning living materials from lab research into practical, eco-friendly innovations.

“Through design that is respectful to the environment, society, and future generations," explains Markos Georgiou, “I believe in changing the world.”

@markos_designs has developed "Ostra," a ceramic-like biomaterial made of discarded oyster shells from local restaurants in Brighton, UK. With this material, the designer created the "Ostra Lamp," which helps keep oyster shells from landfills. Markos is a Cypriot designer and material researcher.

Ostra biomaterial offers great possibilities in terms of circularity and sustainability. It helps to:

- reduce the oyster-shell waste stream, which also helps
raise awareness of the negative environmental impact
of food waste;

- launch a new concrete-like material derived from renewable resources (calcium carbonate and seaweed extract), thus addressing the current supply chain and system of concrete production;

- encourage oyster and seaweed farming - which contributes to a thriving ecosystem through seawater filtration, CO2 capture, water acidity regulation, and biodiversity enrichment; and

- create a natural product that is recyclable and biodegradable.

Why do innovative materials like Ostra matter?

Up to 10% of global greenhouse gasses come from food that is produced but not eaten. US restaurants alone produce an estimated 22 -33 billion pounds of food waste per year. Most food waste ends up in landfills where, without oxygen, it decomposes into methane, a greenhouse gas notably more toxic to the environment and heat-trapping than carbon dioxide.

Exactly one week ago, Isola held its last event of the year, the Isola Design Awards.
It was a beautiful conclusion for a year, 2022, that has brought us new and unexpected adventures.

This edition of the IDA has allowed us to expand our global community further, scouting and embracing new talents that will accompany us throughout the next year and beyond.
The award winners will indeed join us in the next Milan Design Week, displaying the projects that have been considered by the jury the most innovative, creative, and avant-garde proposals.

We want to thank our sponsor, @monkey47, for joining us again in this event. We’re very excited to create greater memories with them during Isola Design Festival 2023.

Stay tuned to discover what Isola and its community is up to for the new year!

This year’s edition of the Isola Design Awards officially ended with a beautiful ceremony held last Friday, hosted by @steccatre.
The participation was incredible, not only by the jurors and the finalists of the Awards but also by many other nominees who had taken part in the event to celebrate the winners, network with our talents and build new connections.

First of all, we want to congratulate all of the winners of the twelve categories that will surely be with Isola in the next Milan Design Week: @mireillesteinhage (Product), @betonlab (Sustainability), @_viviatamm (Innovation and Outdoor), @yangfengfan98 (Furniture), @c.fischerdesign (Seating), @retablo_tienda (Lighting), @formandseek (Tableware), @red.room.studios (Textile), @markos_designs (Material), @tidhar_zagagi (Mobility), @garabatfire (digital).

Worthy of note are also @matdeluca, who won the Community Choice Award, and @teaaam_aaa, who was the winner of the award assigned by @monkey47. A special thanks go precisely to the latter for being our partner and having understood the spirit of the ceremony, perfectly accompanying the celebrations with their gin.

Thanks to the jury for the work done with passion and professionalism and to all of you for participating in the event.
It is time, now, to work on the next Milan Design Week.

‘Materialized’, an exhibition by Spazio Gamma within the Isola Design District at the Milan Design Week is set to pave new paths in biomateriality. Presenting a series of inventive biomaterials that rethink the use of waste varying from canine fur to citric peel, it forsees a step closer to circular designing and a sustainable future.

The showcase intends to publicise the potential of waste materials to act as an alternative to conventional materials for our home, workspaces, neighbourhood, and the urbanscape.

Ostra, Biogun by @markos_designs
-
-
A ceramic-like biomaterial made from waste oyster shells and seaweed extracts. The intention of Ostra is to tackle the current operating system and supply chain of oysters, towards a more circular economy in the UK. Working with oyster shell waste from local restaurants, the design challenge was the disruption of oysters going to landfill through a meaningful and beautiful material in the form of purposeful product designs.

Design Opportunity
Oysters are a great source of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3), with a content up to 95%. Calcium carbonate is a main ingredient in the production of cement and concrete, and its mining in the concrete industry accounts for 8% of global emissions. While in this case it is seen as a valuable material, on the other hand paradoxically, massive amounts of Calcium Carbonate (in the form of shells) are produced as a by-product in the fish industry and discarded as a nuisance waste. Their collection, transportation, and disposal are harmful to the environment and cost money.
