Beyond the Asphalt and 1400 miles, we tell a story of I-15, a multidisciplinary contemporary art experience that explores the highway as a moving canvas.

I-15: The Left and Right Artery reimagines a profound mirror to our connected ideals, capturing the complex, bold and vital look at the characters, industries, and narratives that shape our collective journey.

This Exhibit/Q+A is a soft launch into an ongoing conversation and a challenge of how we view the spaces between us and within us.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be connected to my masculine in a healthy way. Immediately it felt clear that there’s balance in all things and to connect to my masculine I must make peace with and connect with my feminine… which felt elusive to me. I spent a whole year trying to figure out what that meant. I tried more feminine hobbies and styles and besides learning some cool things I didn’t really feel like I was unlocking any deeper wisdom in my pursuit. I even boldly wore a dress to a Gala and I honestly just felt like a buff dude in a dress, excuse me, a pretty, buff dude in a dress… but still just a buff dude in a dress. Exasperated, I made a list of what it means to be a good man and, to my surprise, every word on that list also defined a good woman; honest, dependable, protective, sensitive, bold, loving, etc. And then it hit me. Our labels don’t define us… we define them. Masculinity means whatever I want it to mean because I am Masculine and the master of that label for me. This seemingly simple realization completely changed how I view myself. I am the master of ALL my labels! What does it mean to be Black, a Gay man, a Good Man…. WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT IT TO MEAN! Because I define my labels and they don’t define me. To be connected to my masculine and my feminine is to be comfortable in my own skin; To lovingly and authentically own every part of my short, thick, goofy, curious, caring self.

Here is another piece I shot this last year. The two titles I have in my head are “Plausible Deniability” or “Sorting Our Laundry: Meditations on White Mormon Women and Race.” This should go without saying but white supremacy is wrong and the responsibility is ultimately on white people to fix it. Doesn’t matter if we didn’t start it, we inherited it. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed at the project before us but it’s important and it’s all too easy to feel powerless. Besides teaching my children to recognize and do better, working on my self and those who might listen to me, I can also make art. I’ve given myself the challenge these pieces of addressing the problem of white supremacy by NOT exploiting the pain of People of Color OR looking like I’m supporting white supremacy. I may not do it perfectly but I *will* keep trying. I’d also like to thank @marlenawildart for consulting with me on this and some other work 🙌🏻 #antiracism #antiracistart #mormonart #selfportraitseries
