Waylyup > Fremantle > Freo
🐾🫖🪝🇦🇺
The accepted Noongar word for Fremantle is "Waylyup" (or the place of the woylie). It means "lungs" and makes reference to the air movement on the river (from the windy hills to the sea breeze). For the Whadjuk people, Fremantle is a place of endless resources and has a great spiritual meaning because their ancestors hunted, traded and practiced ceremonies here.

The city of Western Australia also used to receive convicts, bushrangers, prison escapees and sailors. When penal transportation to the colony was allowed, Fremantle became Australia's primary destination for convicts. The maximum security prison ended in 1868 and is now a World Heritage Site. The official naming of the city is in representation of Captain Charles Fremantle, an English naval officer who claimed the west coast as British territory.

Fremantle nowadays became a hipster house for art, alternative therapies, markets, growers, fishers and a big culinary scene. A mix of bohemian style with fancy Victorian and Edwardian streets that every Aussie calls it "Freo". Why? No reason at all, just because Australians love to shorten absolutely every word and make it sound nicer.
