What happens when you bring local business leaders together during challenging economic times?

Last night, we held an intimate panel discussion focused on a central question posed by Heleana: In an era of economic volatility and cash-flow strain for SMEs, what is the role of belonging?

Despite the holiday long weekend, business owners gathered for an incredibly intimate, honest conversation about navigating the weight of running a small-to-medium business today.
Heleana kicked off the night with a question many of us feel deeply: Amid constant shifts and cash-flow pressures, where does belonging fit? What followed was an inspiring session of collective reassurance:

Lucy @allbuttons reminded us that after 36 years in business, these hard times are a blip—we adapt, and Newtown always endures.

Oscar shared how @younghenrys founding value to “serve the people” keeps their vision long-term (and touched on local moves on Wilford St and South King!).

Amy @thesocialoutfit highlighted the dignity and skill behind every garment—showing that quality and care create true value and pride.

Pasan @earlsjukejoint brought perspective to corporate shifts like Maccas coming to Newtown, reminding us of the strength of our local identity and the importance of small bars as third spaces.

The takeaway? Belonging is a business superpower. When you build community beyond the transaction, an intelligent, discerning community shows up to back you, which to many of us feels unique to Newtown.

Special thanks to Tom McDonald from the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre for leaving us with a crucial challenge: how do we actively steward this culture without taking it for granted? Which we will keep working at on our next session in November.

Nikka and Taran are inner west locals so it made sense to celebrate their love the only way they know how - at their local haunts. Starting off with their mates at @thedukeofenmore, then heading to @younghenrys for the party before going for a drink at their own bar @ravenspur.bar and a quick duck into @fortunateson_bar for a shot (which I may or may not have partaken in 😏)

The afternoon was full of loved ones and chosen family. The she’s, he’s and they’s. The beautiful people who make up Nikka and Taran’s community. The faces that light up when they are around and the bodies that hold them when they need it most.

Bringing together your favourite people in your favourite places is what it’s all about 🖤 It’s what I value and what my couples value. It’s what leaves lasting memories behind

Ash and Austin chose to celebrate their love in a way that felt true to them. Darkly romantic, deeply personal, joyful and completely unfiltered.

From the candlelit Gothic altar and falling autumn leaves, to the handmade details, the @loxandchain Till Death rings, the laughter, the tears and the moments that felt both sacred and wildly fun. This was not a performance. It was a real celebration of love, exactly as it should be.
