DIY/DIT. We make records and other things to do with music and art and living on Earth. Sharing art as a revolutionary tool. Naarm based.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Here’s a first! Doomscrolling down the abyss of insta reels and I come across a video of this guy Dougal Shaw of @marthouserecords releasing forgotten recordings his Dad’s band, @thebillymummys. Brisbane post-punk/new wave kind of stuff that sounds like The Cure, The Church etc from the late 70s/early 80s.

His Dad never got to release the music at the time and life continued on over the next few decades. Now its come full circle and Dougal has put it out on vinyl with a limited run of 100. The first pro release for the band.

The music is cool, but the story is even better. The videos 100% drew me in. Great to have another little piece of Aussie music sitting on the shelf.

If you dig this kind of music, go pick up a copy before they’re gone for good (if not already).

"10 YEARS OF ART AS A REVOLUTIONARY TOOL"

20 page printed publication of spiels and liner notes for @marthouserecords

Marthouse Records just wrapped up their label (home to @drsuresunusualpractice) and they have always been strong advocates for all things DIY and weird and wonderful punk + garage sounds of Melbourne

I've always wanted to design for Marthouse so sharing this project feels crazy

Nonetheless it was a real treat to design this zine to forever honour Marthouse in the best form - PRINT

Thanks to the king of DIY for the opportunity @dr___sure

So cool to see how this record and the story of how it came to be has resonated with you all.

Hit the Bandcamp link in bio if you want a copy of the vinyl before it’s sold out — limited edition of 100 — or buy the digital & gimme a hand paying for the pressing haha 🫶

Let’s see if it hits the charts this week, would be pretty amazing after 43 years!!

Thanks for tuning in xx

Ever record an album and it feels like it takes 43 years to come out?

Phil Shaw holding the vinyl test press for the album he recorded in Brisbane in 1983, never released and thought to be lost to time.

Unearthed and out now on @marthouserecords — bandcamp link in bio xx

After a couple of years of sourcing and salvaging cassettes, digitising and remastering them, tracking down long lost bandmates, artwork and film photos and pressing my Dad’s 43 year old ‘album that never was’ to vinyl, I sent a copy in to Rolling Stone. They picked it up and wrote a feature.

I tried to film Dad’s reaction when I called him to let him know he made it in Rolling Stone. A day earlier he heard his song on the radio for the first time (see previous reel) so at this point he’s kinda tripping and in disbelief about the whole scenario 🥲 that laugh lol

Let’s see what happens next ay? Tag ya local radio or news outlet or something, can we get @thebillymummys on the tele?

Buy the LP or digi album at the link in bio 🫶

Still haven’t shown the ol man this account, lez blow it up xx

OUT TODAY

@thebillymummys
A Date Not To Forget

The final vinyl release. Been a real joy bringing this together. Like excavating a treasure lost to the depths of time. Very stoked to have the opportunity to present my old man his debut album. 43 years in the making. Not a day too soon.

Thanks to Phil Shaw, Andrew Massie, Barbara Schmidt and Steven Clarke for making a banger record all those years ago. Thanks to Andrew for designing the original screenprinted poster which I reworked for the cover. Thanks to Sheena Dunn for the live shots I collaged on the back cover. Thanks to Erik Scerba for the 2026 remaster, and resuscitating some of the more degraded tapes. I reckon the tape flutter and wonkiness adds to the overall vibe. Thanks to Zenith for coming in clutch with a super speedy pressing, and for a decade of MHR pressing. Thanks to Kate for having us on RRR this week, Rolling Stone for picking up the story and the Dr Sure’s crew for learning Beach Ball to perform last week, safe to say Dadsy is having his 15 mins fame.

Listen now on streaming / digital, vinyl preorders on their way to you. It even showed up on Instagram to add to this post, wild.

Much love xx
