Archer Davies ~ Borrowed Blue, his third solo exhibition at MARS, 21 May (6-8pm) thru 19 June.
Exploring the borrowed, pseudo-European decorative parapets and facades of Melbourne’s Victorian terraces, Archer himself borrows the charged classical blue in the sky of each painting, reflecting a complex network of influences and references.
“Look up in most parts of inner-Melbourne and you will see the decorative parapets of Victorian single and double storey terraces. On a good day, you can see their pediments, balustrades, urns and finials cutting a proud and eccentric silhouette against a blue sky. My series of oil studies began with a fascination with these gold-rush era facades
(c. 1850–1890). I was drawn to their faded former glory, their sunburnt, damaged and graffiti’d surfaces and the way they compress a European classical vocabulary into a hybrid, improvised architectural language.” Archie Davies from the catalogue essay.
Archer Davies’ paintings have been exhibited at Jan Manton Art, Chapter House Lane Gallery, Seventh Gallery, Well Studio, Tokyo, Oigall Projects and Edwina Corlette Gallery and MARS Gallery. He has been a finalist in the Churchie National Emerging Artist Prize, the Kilgore, the Percival Portrait Prize and the Rick Amor Self-Portrait prize, among others.

Headed to the @caloundraregionalgallery to decide which work I would vote for in the People’s Choice category of the Local Contemporary Art Prize… quickly became bedevilled by the detail, compartmentalising the works in my mind with a facility of drawn line between those with curves, angles and some mastering both. Never a good idea to vote without actually seeing the work in person. I couldn’t include all the artists’ works here, there are some absolute crackers but this is just a glimpse of the line details.

Ewart’s great project that started a a simple “clean up“ of this midcentury sideboard and expanded into a full refurb. This beautiful piece of furniture returned back home to its place under the magnificent bunya painting by @marvene_ash

Wasting my morning thinking about Paris - a sketchbook drawing of a solitary evening about 40 years ago in Montparnasse. Following my Europe on $10 a Day book (you have to be old enough) I stayed at the Fred Hotel, a midcentury building, modest and cheap with a warm vibe. This morning I found it on instagram - still there but with a total makeover. Still those lovely windows though- and is that my skyline antennae( up near the 4G on my screenshot)? Is this interesting even😂- it’s a rainy day for memories @fredhotel

The late summer harvest of the Bunya nuts is booming this year and the Macadamian nuts are starting to kick in - a swing-around of the sunroom at #thebails leading on to the entrance/front door - out of view is the public entry to @thefourthgaragestudio( to left of the front door) ☀️

New arrangements (adding some paintings from the storerooms) in the guest annexe at ’the Bails’ - in time for the Melbourne ’kids’ visit. I’m so happy to have found a place for that first painting done by Archer in his early days in Brisbane. It s an amazing painting of a very young Freda with Beyoncé and Spice Girl references. Other Brisbane memories are in the little guy walking past his studio on Montague Road( Aldi sign😍) and a broken stove top from a decrepit share house (one gas ring aflame😍). Freda’s more recent ’Excitement’ abstract is on the fridge near a 1970’s still life by Coralea Busby from my time in Bundaberg. Can’t wait to see if they find as much joy in this as I do🤩🎄

This is what happens when you get a really good photographer into the studio - a bit of a break from all my snaps. Thank you @christinehallphotographer for these and all your wonderful artwork installation shots. I have uploaded many of them on @thefourthgaragestudio 😍✨
