🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ROV MARLEY

Art is part of the experience at this year’s Shades of Black Film Showcase.

South Florida artist Rov Marley brings his bold, expressive work into the space as we gather for an evening of Black LGBTQ+ film, art and community conversation.

I came across this clip of Rov talking about art and collecting and loved hearing him speak about the work in his own voice. Here’s a little glimpse before you experience his art in person at Shades of Black.

⛈✨Ode to the Stars☔️💥✨✨
Every night I look up at you
as if the only one I truly knew.
An interstellar glow strangles a boundless shadow
piercing atomic armor, reflecting off my contact lens.
My comfort sits in this sky
in this space of everlasting everything
and infinite nothingness.
I know what I feel is my soul reaching for you,
for you are the gun of my lost bullet, found
in a prison of flesh. I’ve never known how to get to you.
Though I am
a child of you, the human form of you
and result of the upheavaling heckling of
your dust burning infinitely away from you.
I surrender myself to you.
There’s no way I could miss your being without having been
a part of you, apart from you.

Everyday I urge to feel the feeling of my body
tumbling
through carnivorous clouds, downward indefinitely,
blissfully,
to feel my heart, my stomach, my intestines, my pelvis
rising to my bleeding throat, shaking and splattering
all the words I never said into the deep red edges of the sky
feeling my last moment forever on to be my last moment forever.
But it is only a nostalgia of when I was torn
from you that I felt my first moment first
and perched myself into the confusion of Earth.

Every night I viciously nail the skin of my chest
as I endure the pain
of your remains
attempt to escape from the holes in my heart.
You claw at the inside of my sternum
shallowing the wound which you’ll strenuously
beam, radiating a pure darkness,
full of light,
full of indigo droplets
staining, running down my neck
only under the surface of my skin.

Every night molten lava consumes the shell of my mask
and every day it hardens anew.

Every day and every night
and every in between
your flaming twinkle magnetizes the tingle
in my chest.
I look up at you and trust
that the same light I see
resides peacefully in me—
is guiding me to be the me
I’m meant to be.
