Hyaluronic Acid doesn’t care about your feelings. It’s greedier than my 4 year old at Target. She wants what she wants and that’s hydration - even if it comes directly from your skin, the very thing you THOUGHT she was there to support and protect. We’ve been lied to. Well, sort of. HA DOES hold 1,000X its weight in water. BUT she is a molecule that doesn’t care where that water is coming from. She simply drinks it up. So, STOP asking specifically for an HA serum. Don’t look for it as an important ingredient- or even one to stay away from as that’s gonna be virtually impossible as most lines have been forced to put it in for their own sanity (ahem, consumers can be bit by if they think they know better than cosmetic chemists and formulators). Ok. So I said what I said and I’m gonna stand by it. I’ve seen too many clients with skin that’s worse for using HA exclusively. And I’m over being gentle about delivering the news. @mary_schook thank you for leading the charge on this one! Are you shocked by this Hyaluronic Acid update?

#repost @mary_schook Hyaluronic Acid has been clinically proven to dehydrate the skin! Since 2019 I’ve been sitting on a December 2018 publication that supported one of my many grievances against the overhyped marketing of hyaluronic acid (HA). It was one of many studies I submitted for an article on the topic.  In this particular study, Estee Lauder and Massachusetts General Hospital teamed up for a skin study originally aimed at testing imaging metrics with the skin, using tools like a corneometer and Raman Scattering Microscopy. Essentially, they were focused on the tools and testing methods rather than testing ingredients. The study involved three patients (ex vivo). The goal was to investigate the structure, barrier function, and chemical content of human skin samples during dehydration and rehydration. 🧴🧪 Scientists treated the skin with glycerin and HA (separately). Glycerin was absorbed well, but HA-treated skin stayed wet, and, surprisingly, HA actually made the skin lose more water than if it were left alone! Skin treated with HA lost water inside the cells faster than untreated skin. Lipids and proteins also changed. What’s super interesting is that when they put HA-treated skin in a warm and humid place, it lost water even faster! 💦 ☹️ But here’s the twist: The skin swelled up like a sponge, but it didn’t actually hold onto the water! It’s like filling a balloon with water but not tying it—water goes in, but it doesn’t stay! So, for all the thousands I’ve seen or spoken with across social media complaining about hyaluronic acid making skin even drier, remember a study commissioned by a Legacy Brand that clinically associates the skin losing more water with the application of hyaluronic acid. The study argues that these are tissue samples, and the dehydrating and rehydrating would not occur in a realistic scenario. Either way, consumers notice this dehydration. They are not dry because of improper application. The study mirrors the dry skin consumers complain about after incorporating HA into their regimen. #dryskin #clinical #clinicalstudy #skincarescience #skinfacts #estylife #skincareingredients #knowbetterdobetter #beverlyhills

Its the shape of the ear for me! It’s incredible to watch the body shift, change and heal and an honor to be apart of the process. When this client came in today, I wanted to work on “reconnecting” her neck as it seemed to me needing some life force. As I was working, I saw how well she was responding—so I quickly snapped a pic of the most significant and noticeable area right around her ear. The last photo I took while walking her out. I noticed how much the actual shape is resuming. It’s just awesome to witness.

It blows my mind that some topical ingredients can affect skin’s neuromediators (and they’re still considered cosmetics, which is a whole other story I want to do some day!). For December’s @womenshealthmag, I wrote about neurocosmetics and the latest ingredients designed to manipulate the brain-skin connection (@seppic_official Sepicalm, palmitoyl tripeptide-8, @mibellebiochemistry Happybelle—and there are lots of others). Thanks to the experts who helped me dig into the research & @thebrianunderwood for the assignment!
