If you’ve been dining with us over the years, you already know the magic that comes out of Helen’s pastry kitchen.

Behind so much of that magic is our Pastry Chef, Candace Foster, who was just named a 2026 @soulgrown_alabama Soul of the South Award winner in the Food & Beverage category!

From her ever-evolving dessert menu to guest favorites like our Angel Biscuits, Tomato Pie, and Banana Pudding, Candace and her team play an important role in what makes a meal at Helen so memorable.

For nearly five years, we’ve watched her creativity grow, her talents shine, and her dedication to her craft continue to impress us. And somehow, she keeps finding new ways to surprise us.

Candace, we’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what you dream up next.

With great joy and a full heart, we share the wonderful news that our President, Ian Rathmell, has married his beloved Brandon Srot at a stunning ceremony officiated by Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio OAM in Ian’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday 11 October, surrounded by loved ones from all corners of the globe.

While the ceremony took place in the synagogue Ian was raised in, Rabbi Ninio incorporated the spirit of Emanuel Synagogue throughout, including the use of our communal tallit (pictured), created as part of a workshop where our members added colours and flourishes to the design, so Ian and Brandon could feel our presence with them on their special day.

May Ian and Brandon enjoy a life together filled with love, health, and happiness. They are now back on home soil, and we look forward to celebrating them tomorrow, Friday 23 October, at our pre-services communal kiddush from 5.30 pm, followed by a special blessing before Shabbat Live at 6.00 pm. We hope you will join us.

REWIND: Closet Confessions

“I am a pink person – hot pink, bubble gum pink, all shades of pink.” @danielleyancey

The contents of a closet reveal so much about the wearer – lifestyle, aspirations, travel, affinities. So we went into the homes of locals who pack a style punch worthy of a double take. A few favorite confessions:

Hannah Conzelman wears a silk chiffon peignoir handmade in the early 1930s. “Nothing excites me more than receiving a box of pieces from France.” @devorevintage

Steve Thomas still has the Japanese wool suit he wore on his first date with Valerie in 1987. “People assumed I was dressing him, but he is the fashionista,” Val laughs. @thevalgroup

Morgan Jones Johnston on vintage: “It’s less about the piece itself and more about the moment I find it.” @ruggedandfancy

Kristen Saban’s closet is mostly creamy neutrals – but that aqua sequined dress says she isn’t afraid to sparkle. @kristennsaban
