: 🇵🇭🫶Our Roots shape us + 𝐀𝐀𝐏𝐈 heritage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mom + Dad were born and raised in the Philippines.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Those of you who’ve traveled to Manila or neighboring islands are probably aware that it is a developing country.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So to be able to leave the Philippines to work, let alone live in a developed country such as the USA or Australia (where my brother and I were born and raised) was a dream for my parents.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dad finished a Fine Arts degree + later was blessed with the opportunity to work at “Hanna-Barbera” — producers of “The Flinstones”+ “The Smurfs.”And subsequently moved to Australia.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mom’s life was a little more challenging.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She lost her Mom at 2. And her Dad at 15, but she was determined to work overseas and pursue her career in Finance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I lived 21 years of my life in Sydney + through Mom’s work for Qantas, we traveled often to Hawai‘i.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Long story short, I loved Hawai‘i so much and my now husband, Jason, that I wanted to move to the Islands, where Melia + Kiele were born🙏
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Leaving family and close friends was a very hard thing for me, but I wanted to explore a new chapter in the USA.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This first photo was taken in New York with Frieda Wong, my immigration lawyer who was truly an angel + so instrumental for helping me come here.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everyone’s journey is so unique.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And there’s no question that my roots paved the way for where I am today —
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
all because Mom + Dad had a desire to give my brother and I opportunities outside the limitations of what they experienced in the Philippines.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which is why I acknowledge my asian, Filipina heritage and so thankful to those who’ve supported my family and I on this journey, in beautiful Hawai‘i + in this beautiful planet we all belong and are connected to❣️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Aloha xx. Marylea
