𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 returns to Mount Auburn Cemetery this December! We are honored to bring our tradition of outdoor large-scale light & sound artworks with indoor candle lighting & live music to the community for a 6th year. This annual gathering provides space to reflect, connect with nature, hold remembrance, and be inspired through Mount Auburn’s historic illuminated landscape.

𝑻𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒘— join us for an evening of light during the darkest days of the year. Visit the event website for further information and the ticket portal: 𝙬𝙬𝙬.𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚.𝙤𝙧𝙜

This year, MASARY has created four new artworks with reflective and interactive elements inspired by Mount Auburn and the seasonal solstice moment. Guests will enjoy a revamped food and beverage area called Solstice Circle, while returning favorites including the Lantern Walk (within a new area), Thought Artist Theater, Community Message Boards, and candle lighting service with live string instruments all offer meaningful moments of contemplation and connection.

We invite you and your loved ones to join us for this year-end tradition: 𝘄𝘄𝘄.𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲.𝗼𝗿𝗴 (link in bio)

In 2015, NEFA launched the Creative City pilot program in partnership with the Barr Foundation ( @barrfdn ) with the intention of offering direct support for artists of all artistic disciplines to reimagine places for art in Boston, engage public imagination, and inspire community members to share in civic experiences. Investing in artists and the creative process has been a core value at NEFA that is fueled by a belief that artists are, and have the ability to be, civic leaders within their communities.

Today, as part of the People's History of NEFA and in celebration of our milestone 50th anniversary, we revisit the impacts of this program with grant recipient and civic leader Ryan Edwards, co-founder and principal at MASARY Studios ( @masary_studios ), where artists "transform sound, light, and technology into unforgettable, site-specific experiences."

Curious about AI and how it might shape our culture? Artists for Humanity not only participated in the exhibition by contributing two stations for the installation, but also created a video documenting ‘Ship it!’

You may have seen our previous post about ‘Ship it! Building Bridges for Better AI Outcomes.’ This exhibition is an interactive AI installation with the goal of starting a dialogue about artificial intelligence between people with all different levels of interest and knowledge about the technology to make sure we’re not passively engaging with AI— Lauren Mecca, Founder of Tech/ish, wants us to think about and guide the future of AI.

Shoutout to Video Studio for this awesome documentation of the exhibition and congratulations to Lauren Mecca for such a successful exhibition.

The most memorable design isn’t just something you see—it’s something you experience.

The Tanglewood Gala was a multi-sensory evening, where every creative discipline worked together to tell one story. Inspired by Swan Lake, the experience - breathtaking florals, nature, immersive visuals by Masary Studios, music from DJ Sören, and the artistry of Boston Ballet dancers, all beautifully woven together by the team at Fleurish NYC events and BSO’s event team. (And I’m sure I left out a zillion others so my apologies!)

It’s a wonderful reminder that the art of an extraordinary event, like the art of a well-designed home, comes from collaboration. When designers, artists, musicians, performers, lighting designers, and creatives each bring their expertise, the result is something far greater than the sum of its parts.

That’s the kind of design that stays with you long after the evening ends. ✨

Quarterly post... just so you know I’m still at it.

From graduations and speeches to World Cup watch parties, gallery exhibition openings, and the biggest dance party in the Commonwealth, it’s been one incredible June. And somehow, summer is only getting started.

Grateful for everyone who helped make it happen.

Have ruthless optimism & Give more than you take.

Thank you to @geespin , @dnice , @centralsqbid , @cambridgemass, @miss_sizzo and my fam.

Now it’s time to recharge in Martha’s Vineyard. 🌊

Love. ❤️

Another Cambridge Dance Party in the books… and what a night. ❤️

To everyone who danced, laughed, sang, and celebrated with us, thank you for proving once again that the world doesn’t just live here… it dances here.

A huge thank you to @dnice & @geespin for giving us a soundtrack we’ll be talking about all summer.

To the @cambridgepolice , @cambridgemass City Manager’s Office, @cambridgemafiredepartment , and our EMTs, thank you for helping keep everyone safe while the city celebrated.

A special shoutout to our guy Matt Nelson, who is always behind the scenes making sure every detail comes together. Your dedication never goes unnoticed, and it’s always a pleasure working alongside you.

Thank you to @masary_studios for transforming City Hall with another incredible light installation, and to @theluxbooth_ for helping everyone capture memories they’ll keep long after the music stopped.

Most importantly… thank you to the people. Every smile, every dance circle, every hug between strangers reminded us why Central Square is unlike anywhere else.

Here’s to another unforgettable night in the greatest city to ever do it.

Until next time. ✨

We debuted two art installations in Coolidge Square on Wednesday as part of our "Open for Business" project! The City commissioned these pieces to remind everyone that even through the Mt. Auburn Street construction, Coolidge Square remains a vibrant place to shop, dine, and stroll.

The pieces are "Dazzling the Pines" by Elaine Buckholtz - located at Sullivan Playground - and "Transitional" by MASARY Studios - located at Coolidge Hardware. Many thanks to the owners of Coolidge Hardware for donating the space!

We’re throwing it back this Thursday and reminiscing on some incredible collaborations.

Last year, as part of our “20 Questions for 20 Years” celebration, we partnered with Grisha Coleman to curate the Rehearsing and Performing the Everyday theme over the course of a weekend.

Through her artistic and political vision, Grisha invited us to consider why critiquing and reimagining the everyday — and rehearsing new futures together — is so necessary.

Check out and revisit her choreographed performance, Rehearsal for Everyday Life - a piece that highlights the diverse movement approaches and techniques of dancers from across the Boston region.

This reel is just a glimpse. CLICK THE LINK IN OUR BIO to hear Grisha share, in her own words, the thinking and inspiration behind the work.

We’re very excited to be part of Ship It! at #BOSTechWeek by @techweeka16z!
Our Creative Technology studio is creating two stations for the exhibit. One station will focus on highlighting the contrast between the modern chat bot’s reassuring tone and the underlying goals it’s optimizing for. The installation will feature a monitor fixed to a realistic mannequin and visitors will use headphones and choose from three different scenarios where a warm AI voice plays alongside the transparent “system log”.
The second station is a live generative experience where visitors can browse a physical copy of OpenAI’s Industrial Policy, then scan a QR code to submit their own descriptions of what “Good AI” might look or act like. These contributions will appear in real-time on a dedicated screen, creating a collective visual artifact!
This interactive AI accountability project is being produced for Boston Tech Week (May 26–31) at Midway Studios in Fort Point hosted by Masary Studios.

🗓️Friday, May 29

🎨 Installation open 11am-4pm

🪩Reception 5-7pm (RSVP required and available via the link in our bio)

📌Midway Artist Studios

Come interact with the installation and discuss what our future might look like in a world where AI is becoming more and more prevalent every day. Let’s start a conversation!
