I remember the miracle of the day we recorded this song live in the studio with @scott_hull_mastering at @masterdisk_nyc in Peekskill NY.

I was struggling with my voice, as an allergy & sinus sufferer I’d been congested for several days, my voice was so raw from meds that I was worried I couldn’t deliver the vocals like I would’ve wanted. And it was one shot, record today or nothing.

But God answered my prayer, he gave me my voice and we were able to record the song in a few takes. (days before, I couldn’t hold a note!)

I was able to sing it’s message, a message of hope to loved ones in my life that were in the trenches of hard times. I cried for them, I wanted to do more for them. The best I could do was to sing my love to them, tell them I’m with you, tell them they’re not alone, to hang on to hope. Hope is what carries us to the other side of our trials.

To anyone who needs to hear it—you are not alone 🤍

Is There Any Hope? feat. Tara Louise, Tilmann Höhn, Ulf Kleiner & Alexander Sonntag

I wrote this song in hindsight of my marriage falling apart a couple of years earlier. Somehow under the influence of the atmosphere and Jazz traditions of Paris, where I stayed in connection with a book project at the time, it seems as if the state of intense hopelessness, depression and helplessness derived from becoming aware that there’s absolutely nothing I could do to save my marriage, had to find a way to express itself, be processed and therefore be overcome. The resolution of this painful state is suggested by the second, more rhythmic part of the song.

We recorded the instruments as a live performance with Tilmann Höhn on guitars, Ulf Kleiner on (occasionally treated) grand piano and synthesizer, Alexander Sonntag on double bass and electric bass and me on drums at the Art of June Studios, Frankfurt, perfectly engineered and mixed by Heinz Hess. Tara Louise sent her vocals from her studio in Los Angeles and Scott Hull mastered the piece masterfully at Masterdisk New York. #jazzballad #hopeanddespair #amazingvocals #divorceprocess #musicandart
