Looking back at Matei Toșa’s previous solo exhibition ✨

Moving fluidly between reality and speculation, an uncanny atmosphere permeates Matei’s drawings, where the surrealism depicted feels increasingly immediate and holds the potential to become plausible within the conditions of the (global ongoing) present. The artist revisits heard or imagined stories, blending them with surprising twists in an almost tongue-in-cheek manner.

Roamers operates as an analogy for in-betweenness - evoking transitions, passages, and crossings between states, places, and conditions. Drawing from a local story - circulating around the area where Matei lives, known as “Dead Man’s Curve / Curba Morții” - the artist develops speculative fictions emerging from the margins. Here, zombies and remnants of an afterlife resurface, and reality collides with haunting scenarios, bringing reflection on how irreverent our daily lives have become.

The selection of works evokes a state of unconditional unsafety: a street corner once marked by accidents is translated into a space of fear, tension, and latent conflict, where suspicion shapes behavior and people or nature are set against one another. (...)

The many faces of MATCA artspace ✨✨

Yesterday we celebrated our 9th anniversary, and we put together a throwback to our activity - a selection of exhibitions from 2017 to 2026.

It was hard to choose just a few shows/works from our archive, and even harder to properly credit all the works included in the 20 images, given the space allowed for text in this post (hopefully we’ll publish them somewhere, sometime, with all the proper specifications).

As we slowly approach our 100th exhibition this year, we’re also looking back at all the works we’ve installed over time, at all the setups and changes the space has gone through. We’re grateful for all the collaborations and friendships we’ve built along the way. Cheers to more - and fingers crossed for the stability we need to remain present on the scene in the years to come!

xoxo

The fitness instructor dances her routine
(and films a video during a military coup)

Curator: Alina Andrei

White Cuib, 6 martie - 2 aprilie
