$I really enjoyed the “What’s the Truth?” Harvard laser meeting and had the pleasure of speaking with co-director Dr. Mathew Avram about his research on fractional lasers and skin cancer risk reduction. Always inspiring to discuss the science behind treatments I use every day. 🩷$

$This interview with Dr. Matt Avram reinforces what I tell my patients all the time: lasers may offer benefits beyond improving how skin looks. Research suggests that PDL and fractional lasers—both ablative and nonablative—may help reduce future skin cancer risk and improve the skin’s cellular environment by reducing senescent cells. A study by Jamie Hu, MD, Dr. Avram, and colleagues found that PDL was associated with a 50% lower risk of new facial BCCs and SCCs combined in patients with a previous skin cancer. Promising evidence, with more research needed. 🩷 Dr. Wanner’s study also suggests that laser treatment may reduce senescent cells aged or damaged cells that can contribute to inflammation and tissue dysfunction potentially supporting healthier skin aging and repair. 📖 “Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment Is Associated With Decreased Development of Subsequent Keratinocyte Carcinoma” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40662586/$

$What lasers are the experts using? When it comes to fractional lasers, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. The right treatment depends on what you’re looking to target, how much downtime you’re comfortable with, and how aggressive you want the treatment to be. Dr. Shirazi sat down with Dr. Mathew Avram, Director of Laser and Cosmetics at Harvard Medical School and a leading expert in dermatologic surgery, at the Masters of Aesthetics Convention to discuss how he approaches fractional laser treatments and why combining technologies can often lead to the best results. $What if looking younger is only part of the story? Research suggests fractional laser treatments may do more than improve appearance. They may also help aging skin function better. That’s where the conversation about skin longevity gets interesting. Dr. Shirazi sat down with Dr. Mathew Avram, director of the Mass General Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center and associate professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, to explore what happens beyond the visible results of lasers. They discuss cellular renewal and why he calls this one of the most important developments in laser medicine in the last five years.
