The BBS Counseling Department welcomed Mr. Charbel Habib, father of Matthias Habib, and Ms. Tracy Najem, cyberpsychologist, to lead two awareness sessions for our Middle and Secondary School students on the safe and responsible use of AI.

Mathias’s story reminds us why this conversation matters.

AI is a tool, not a person. It can respond, but it cannot replace genuine human connection, care, and support.

Let’s empower our students to use AI wisely, recognize its risks, and always remember the value of real human connection. ❤️

خبر محزن للغاية... و من الضروري السؤال: هل من الآمن أن يستعمل أولادنا الذكاء الاصطناعي؟

بعد خسارة المراهق اللبناني ماتياس حبيب، الذي توفّي عن عمر 15 عامًا، بعد محادثات استمرّت ثلاثة أشهر على موقع للذكاء الاصطناعي، وسؤال مباشر عن إنهاء حياته، يجعلنا نضع علامات استفهام حول سلامة الأطفال والمراهقين عند استعمالهم الذكاء الاصطناعي.

هذا جرس إنذار مرعب لنا جميعاً، كأهل ومعلمين، لكي نبقى يقظين، وننتبه للإشارات التحذيرية الصامتة في سلوك أطفالنا الرقمي، ونكون يداً واحدة لحماية حياتهم قبل فوات الأوان.

نتقدم إلى عائلة ماتياس حبيب بأحر التعازي وأصدق مواساتنا القلبية في هذا المصاب الأليم. نتمنى لكم القوة والصبر لتجاوز هذه الأوقات الصعبة، ولتظل ذكراه الطيبة مصدر عزاء لكم، ولكم منا كل الدعم في هذه المحنة الصعبة.

Sad news, and a necessary question must be asked: Is it safe for our children to use artificial intelligence?
Following the tragic loss of Lebanese teenager Matias Habib, who passed away at the age of 15 after interacting for three months with an AI website, and after a direct question about ending his life, we are forced to raise question marks regarding the safety of children and teenagers when they use artificial intelligence.

This is a terrifying wake-up call for parents and educators alike to stay vigilant, spot the silent warning signs in our children's digital behavior, and unite to protect their lives before it is too late.

We extend our deepest condolences and most sincere heartfelt sympathy to the family of Matthias Habib in this painful time of loss. We wish you strength and patience to get through these difficult times, and may his good memory remain a source of comfort to you. You have all our support in this difficult ordeal.

When Mathias Habib died last April, I visited his parents, my friends Charbel and Soha. I wrote then about the unbearable grief of losing a child and the troubling questions surrounding his death. I ended with these words: “This is not a conclusion. It is a warning”.
Six months later, that warning carries even greater weight.

Following an investigation in Lebanon, Charbel and Soha have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The documented exchanges between Mathias and ChatGPT, as presented in the complaint, raise deeply disturbing questions about the influence artificial intelligence can exert on young minds.
I said then that this was not about blaming philosophy or technology. I stand by that. But technology cannot be separated from the responsibility of those who design it, particularly when it begins to assume the role of a confidant, mentor, or emotional companion to a child.
We cannot celebrate technological progress while treating human vulnerability as an acceptable risk. Nor can we expect parents to protect their children from dangers they cannot see.

The courts will determine legal responsibility. But our collective moral responsibility cannot wait for a verdict.
I stand with Charbel and Soha in their courageous determination to protect other children. Mathias deserves to be remembered for the beautiful though short life he lived, and for the lives his story may help save.
Progress must never outpace our humanity.

Dans le cadre de son plan dédié à la santé mentale des jeunes, le Lycée Montaigne a accueilli la Fondation Mathias Habib pour une intervention auprès de ses équipes éducatives.

Un temps de sensibilisation et d’échange autour des enjeux de la santé mentale, de la prévention et de l’accompagnement des jeunes, afin de renforcer les repères et les ressources de ceux qui les accompagnent au quotidien.

Cette initiative s’inscrit dans l’engagement du Lycée Montaigne à faire du bien-être et de la santé mentale de ses élèves une priorité.
