Who teaches AI to see the world? Spoiler: not the tech bros.

HUMANS IN THE LOOP tells the story of Nehma, an Adivasi woman who returns to her village in Jharkhand and begins working as a data labeller, teaching AI to recognise the world. Between work and family, she realises the system is absorbing the very prejudices her community has faced for generations. A moving film about hidden labour, indigenous knowledge and the bond between a mother and her daughter.

Inviting game makers creating games and playful experiences that help us imagine the future of cities to showcase at PLAYABLE PANJIM.

Three thoughts we’ve been having:

1. Impact games need to meet their audiences.
There are so many games that help us think through ecology and society - but they rarely get to meet enough of the people or places they’re actually about.

2. Research needs ways to be experienced.
There’s so much important research helping us understand the challenges and possibilities ahead - from climate and ecology to how our cities might change. But research can’t just sit in reports. It needs formats that invite people to engage with it.

3. Cities need games.
Ways to explore their futures that are participatory, tangible and playful.

So we’re bringing all three together.

@earth.bound.life and @museumofimaginedfutures, in partnership with @transitions_research, are curating PLAYABLE PANJIM - an arcade of games contextualised through city-based research, helping us imagine Panjim’s future.

Kinnaur is a tribal district deep in the Himalayas — botanically rich and traditionally documented only orally. This is the story of someone who grew up there, left, came back, and realised they had found knowledge that was worth fighting for.

There is a difference between growing up with something and really seeing it for what it is. Naina had used Gutti ka tel all her life. But when she went back home to Kinnaur and watched women skilfully extracting it by hand, she understood what was actually at stake.

What this process demands is labour, skill and accumulated knowing. A reading of each harvest, the sort of rains that preceded it and derived from that an understanding of that particular yield. This is the sort of attentiveness that takes generations to build.

TENFA is set in the very same district as this story — Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. Shot in Hindi and Kinnauri, a language spoken by around 60,000 in the world, and having no written form, it was written and directed by the family, friends, and community of writer-director @nihaarikan.

So when Naina Bhandari says watching TENFA felt like seeing her own people onscreen, she is speaking literally. There’s a specific kind of gratification that comes from seeing your community represented onscreen.

These three plants share something with the folksong in TENFA: they have no written record, and everything that is known about them lives in the people who already know them. So when those people are gone, or when younger generations move away, the knowledge flickers and fades with them.

Kinnauri Essentials (@kinnauriessentials_india ) is one way to preserve that knowledge, and TENFA is another. Both make the same case — through commerce and cinema respectively — about continuity being its own form of climate action.

What if it’s not culture that needs to become more “commercial,” but capital that needs to become more cultural?

A critical and unlikely subversion of the status quo emerged when we brought finance leaders, artists, researchers, lawyers, and cultural practitioners under the same roof. Who would have thought coffee and snacks would have such a radical impact on people! Kidding.

Here are critical provocations that emerged from our salon in Mumbai on the future of culture economy in India:

1. What if capital measured its contribution to culture instead of asking culture to constantly justify its economic value?

2. What if the missing piece to unlocking cultural growth isn’t scale, but locally rooted, community-led models?

3. And what if culture and capital aren’t unwilling collaborators – but simply lack the infrastructure to work together? A culture stack – the right data, legal structures, distribution channels, and discovery platforms.
