Another successful flower show..

Seeing our material come to life in the landscape never gets old. Gardens and flower shows were never part of the original plan, but they’ve opened up a whole new world for me. I’ve learned so much about plants, materials and how thoughtful landscape design can bring everything together.

Huge congratulations to the team on bringing home both a Gold Medal and the Environmental Innovation Award. Feeling grateful to have been a small part of it. 🌱🏅

The Silo Garden wins Gold 🥇🌱

What happens when you take a zero-waste philosophy out of the kitchen and plant it in a garden?

Abi Stoyle has answered that beautifully.

Built around the principle that all that comes in remains, the garden treats every material as part of a living system. Nothing is simply discarded. Things are reused, fermented, composted, transformed and returned.

It is Silo thinking translated into soil, structure and season.

And now, just six months after graduating college, Abi’s first show garden has won Gold at RHS Badminton, alongside the Environmental Innovation Award.

A garden already understands zero waste.
Nothing disappears. It simply changes form.

Massive congratulations to Abi, and to everyone who helped nurture this beautiful new expression of Silo into being.

We’ve been thinking a lot about this award.

Not because it’s another trophy to put on a shelf, but because of what it represents.

A few years ago, Surrounding Counties was just two mates asking a simple question:

Can landscapes be built differently?

Can we value reclaimed materials as much as new ones?
Can waste become a design opportunity?
Can biodiversity, craftsmanship and beauty all exist in the same place?

That question has shaped every project we’ve taken on since.

So to receive the Environmental Innovation Award isn’t the finish line. It’s a sign that the conversation is changing.

To @abistoyle_garden thank you for trusting us to be part of your vision. To everyone who helped build it, this belongs to all of you.

The award is incredible.

But the real achievement is knowing this way of thinking is no longer on the fringes.

For us a the real value isn’t measured in medals. It’s measured in the people who give their time, skills and belief to bring an idea to life. Designers. Makers. Growers. Friends. Mums. Brothers. Partners. Everyone quietly pulling in the same direction because they believe the story deserves to exist.

Who doesn’t love gold though ? 💚

We’re now over halfway through the build, and planting starts today!

So, how has it gone so far?

Like any project, we’ve had our ups and downs. A few hiccups along the way are pretty standard, but overall I’m really happy with how it’s progressing, and we’re on track.

When I first started this project, I wondered whether it was interesting enough. After all, it’s “just” a pergola. But as it’s come together, I’ve realised just how much is happening within such a small space, all centred around and hanging from the pergola.

The pergola is made from reclaimed timber from @ashwellsreclaimedtimber. It’s incredibly hard-wearing, making oak feel almost like a softwood, yet it has the most beautiful warmth and character.

At the rear of the garden, we’ve installed a cork wall, finished with a patchwork of 3D cork tiles that simply make you want to reach out and touch them. They even have the most incredible natural aroma.

We’ve also had four fantastic Malus trees delivered by @deepdaletrees each chosen for a different stage of flowering and fruiting to extend seasonal interest. Malus ‘Rote Wolke’, with its deep, dark foliage, brings a wonderful richness that perfectly complements the Ekki timber.

Yesterday, we took delivery of the Oystercrete pieces from @matter.forms, including the large worktop. It definitely took a few people to lift it into place, but it was worth every effort, it’s absolutely beautiful. The setts will be installed over the next few days, but as they’re white, we’re keeping them safely out of the way until the messy planting is finished!

We’ve also had our reclaimed steel frames and pipework delivered for the rainwater harvesting system, which will be installed over the coming days.

Every material we’ve chosen has a beautiful warmth and earthiness to it. Together, they’re creating a space that feels tactile and natural. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together once the planting is in.

A fun commission we’ve been working on over the past few weeks.

Fragment Stool_ST_01 continues the Fragment series first presented at Lake Como Design Festival, translating ideas from the collection into a functional piece.

It’s been a lot of fun spending the last few weeks at Peanut Factory, prototyping, fabricating and refining every detail. Grateful to collaborate with such an incredible team and workshop @atelier.wama @kaekatz

The stool is now installed at HAKKŌ Matcha Bar in Aarhus. If you’re nearby, go grab a matcha and check it out.
