We aren’t meant to process so many images endlessly. Let’s return and study the ones we think we saw. Don’t be surprise if I repost certain images. There are secrets there. They await you.

Where do we fit in nature? Are our structures and our material world any different from what we think of as biology? Isn’t it all just part of one nearly infinite tapestry? That’s the problem with us. We want to understand the whole tapestry.

This concern is an ongoing investigation in my work. These images were made around 2016-2017.

Work made more than 20 years ago.
I’m calling this project Delta Waves. It was made when I was living in the Mississippi Delta (where I was born and raised) and includes a lot of images of people that I knew very closely back then, including friends and family. The title refers to the short delta waves that can, if experienced while awake, indicate a skewed sense of reality. This seems to sum up my adventures of 20-25 years ago; a time spent wandering and testing boundaries like some person who wasn’t quite aware of their own mortality. Many of the people I knew then are now gone from my life (in one way or another) and this series is part of my tribute to the crazy place where I spent so much time. It was as if we were all in a fugue, drifting through dream and nightmare both, only dimly aware that there could be something else later in our lives.

ON THE APP: MATTHEW BAUM - We’re kicking off a new series featuring photographers you can meet on the PhotoPhlo app. First up…me.

I’m the founder of PhotoPhlo and a photographer and educator based in New York’s Hudson Valley. I always loved cameras, but I truly found photography on a meandering road trip after I dropped out of architecture school. Within a week I knew it was my path.

The photos in this reel are from The Last Picture Show, a long-term project exploring the United States through more than 150,000 miles of road trips between 9/11 and the 2016 presidential election. The work includes landscapes, portraits, and candid observations from across the country.

I launched the PhotoPhlo education platform in 2023 and now the app after realizing that the most valuable thing I gave my students in 20 years of teaching was a place to meet other photographers, share work, exchange feedback, and find camaraderie.

If you’d like to join me and other thoughtful and engaged photographers, we’re currently testing the app with a private group and you’re invited. The first iteration features the Daily Phlo, a fun, once-a-day photo game that connects photographers through their work, building genuine relationships and real conversation.
