🏒 🧠 Matthew Schaefer finished the 2025–26 season at +13, which shows his offense doesn’t cost him on defense. What sets him apart is his timing. He knows exactly when to jump into the play:

✅ He counts bodies before he goes
✅ He draws a man, usually when the opponent’s feet are pointed down ice
✅ He makes a good first pass, then immediately gets open for the puck back

🧲 He also finds open ice, which makes him a puck magnet. Watch the last clip: as the weak-side D, he reads that every opponent is facing the puck on the strong side, then explodes up ice for a lane pass. 👀

Matthew Schaefer is firing 3.6 a night this season, up from 2.7 when he scored 23 goals last year.

He plays almost 26 minutes a night, on the top pair and the top power-play unit. 8 assists, no goals yet. The shots are there and the goals haven’t come.

LA has allowed 3.86 goals a game so far.

“Why me? Why now? Why couldn’t it have happened after my draft year? This was going to be my best hockey season.”

These are the conversations we’re having tonight, hoping chemo can start tomorrow and won’t be delayed again.

What do you say to your child when he asks you that? He worked so hard for this year. He had plans. He had dreams. And I have no answer that makes any of this fair.

Madden is tough. He is strong. He is a warrior. He is not alone. And every bit of this is heartbreaking and unfair. He can be all of those things and still be a fifteen-year-old boy who wants his life back. He’s allowed to be angry. He’s allowed to ask why. He shouldn’t have to be this strong.

Tonight, we showed him a video we’d been saving from Matthew Schaefer, who said he hopes Madden can teach him how to put the puck in the net one day. A little light in a really hard night.

God, I hope he gets that day. I hope he gets to “teach him.” I hope he finds another place in the hockey world he loves so much. But I also know that tonight, he wants the place he worked so hard for.

These videos have brought smiles when we’ve desperately needed them, and we’re so grateful. But I worry about when they slow down, while the treatment keeps going and his team keeps playing.

I’m his mom. I’m supposed to have answers. Tonight, all I can do is listen, love him and sit beside him in how fucking unfair this is. And wish with everything I have that I could change it. #madden21 #neveralone #samewarriordifferentbattle
