Thank you to everyone who came out last night and showed so much love for @larubeyasurfing, the boards, the art, and our community

It was a truly special night…new friendships were made across collaborations and communities. A beautiful reminder of what’s possible when we come together.

We know that all of this support will have a positive impact on the important work @larubeya is doing and help carry their mission forward.

This is the “bathroom break selfie” I took at work to try out Matthew Fisher’s silhouette idea for the front cover. Fisher has blessed me with his beautiful artwork for the second album in a row, pulling from his vast collection of gorgeous visions. Matt has been a friend of me and my brother Edwin for over a decade now, and he has long been an inspiring and encouraging presence in our artistic practice. I am incredibly grateful for his collaborations. As a primarily musical artist, I have found it to be a special and unexpected thing to begin to “see” my work (as I am making it) *within* the visual language of someone else’s creations, but this is what my heart and brain have been feeding me with these last two albums with regards to Fisher’s artwork.

Here I am, pleased, sittin in the sun at Village View playground, enjoying the nice weather, happy to be handling wax. Self-releasing these last two Andy Boay LPs has been a very validating, empowering, and often exhausting experience that I would encourage anyone to do if you can scrape together the pressing costs (and a shelf or two to store your stock). Getting a decent label-printer was a game changer for mailorder packing. Thanks to Valerie my fianceé for taking these portraits of me muggin.

I recorded Doomed on my Tascam 688 Midistudio, an 8-track cassette multitrack recorder. This machine lived in Orlando at my brother’s house for most of the last ten years, and I occasionally recorded Tonstartss jam sessions on it. The last solo album I put out in 2025 was recorded on my previous NYC cassette machine, the Yamaha MT8X, which is a great unit but much more limited than the Tascam 688. A couple of years ago I moved the Tascam up to

A night of surf, art, craft, and conversation.

On October 1st, Cafe Studio hosts Shared Waters with @kingsglassing bringing together artists and shapers from across the NY/NJ community to support this fundraiser for @larubeyasurfing.

A collection of boards shaped by different hands, perspectives, and practices, coming together for something beyond the boards themselves.

We’ve wanted to do something like this since we started five years ago, but never imagined it would grow into something on this scale.

What began as an idea has become a collaboration between artists, shapers, and a community, all coming together around a shared purpose.

We’ve been putting Shared Waters together for the better part of a year, bringing together an incredible group of artists and shapers from across the greater NY/NJ surf and art communities in support of @larubeyasurfing

At the heart of this project are the artists and shapers who generously shared their time, creativity, and craft to make these boards what they are. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who brought their vision to the project, and to @larubeyasurfing for the work they continue to do and for giving this project a purpose beyond the boards themselves.
