SOUND ON. 🔉

This is not a picture.

Core is not about the abs but how it helps us with our physical demands.

The ability to brace hard, is an indication of how much load your torso can absorb, its ability to hold stable while your limbs create movement resulting in power and strength.

A strong core connects your lower and upper body.
Think pickle/padel/tennis, your swings comes from transfer ground contact which ends in your racket contact with the ball.

Strength matters. How quickly your child can use it matters too.

Pogo hops help develop reactive strength: your child’s ability to absorb force on landing and quickly produce force for the next take-off.

Each bounce uses the stretch-shortening cycle, with muscles and tendons working together to load and rebound. The body’s natural elastic recoil helps power the next bounce. Think of it as learning to use the body like a spring.

We coach the details: quick ground contacts, a tall posture and a consistent rhythm. The goal isn’t to chase height or rush through repetitions. It’s to move with purpose and control.

Through individual feedback and challenges matched to each child’s readiness, we build these skills into a wider foundation for running, jumping and sporting performance.

Build the athlete. The sport comes after.

Fast running starts with what happens between each step.

Quick feet, good rhythm and learning to bring the foot back underneath the body all help an athlete move efficiently as speed increases.

That is why we spend time on the smaller pieces before asking them to run faster.

Following last week’s Athletics Workshop for NDC coaches, the next phase brought the learning onto the pitch with the players.

Boys U8, U9, U10 and U11, together with Girls U11 and U12 from the NDC, took part in athletics-based sessions overseen by former Team Singapore sprinter Yao Peng from @maxformsg

Through activities focused on movements for speed and change of direction, the sessions exposed NDC players to principles from athletics that can complement their development in football.

It is part of UTR!’s continued efforts to integrate sport science and cross-sport learning into the football environment, building stronger physical foundations to support long-term player development.

Earlier this week, NDC coaches took part in an Athletics Workshop at KFH led by former Team Singapore sprinter Yao Peng from @maxformsg

The session explored how principles from athletics, particularly around speed and change of direction, can complement football training and support the development of athleticism in our young players.

Next week, Yao Peng, with the support of NDC coaches and sport science team, will deliver a similar workshop to the NDC U8 to U11 teams.

It is part of UTR!’s continued effort to bring sport science and multisport learning into the football environment, strengthening the way we support both coach development and long-term player development.

CUT THROUGH THE NOISE: EP2

Unhealthy obsession with RESULTS instead of the JOURNEY.

Have we forgotten why any one of us started working out in the first place?

For the same reasons we put kids through sports or when our parents started us in some form of physical activity, it was to begin the journey of learning a new sport, to be physically fit, to learn values, soft skills, to be part of a community.

Most of us don’t pick up a sport or fitness thinking of results, podium, PBs or recognition.

Those came later. When the love of the process, of learning, of being disciplined and with some good fortune, we discover our talent, that’s when we explore the idea of competition.

Even so, it is a journey started.

The obsession of results, in my opinion has led us on a road to look for hacks, short cuts, or buying equipment to get an edge.

After decades of training, what kept me going at my age is the love of challenging myself. To discover new ideas, new pain points as my body changes over the years.

From pushing my body in my 20s, without realising I was riding on youth to recover and perform.

In my 40s, it has pivoted to being efficient in my training while balancing career, family and recovery so I get to train for more years.

The damage we do to our bodies are not immediate. It usually takes years for problems to show.

National athletes have shelf lives. There is a window of peak physical capacity. Hence, we need any edge we can get. Before that, it was about learning the process of being great. Showing up, prioritising rest over social life amongst others.

Fitness should be something we started to enhance our quality of life into our later years.

Fitness events and races are great opportunities to motivate ourselves in this very long journey.

While we pursue that, let’s not forget why we started in the first place :)

Stay tune to episode 3!

Running more does not always make a child faster.

Before speed improves, a young athlete needs the movement, coordination and control to produce it well.

Coach Mohd runs us through how a Track & Field session progresses from preparation into acceleration work—developing the physical base behind faster running, not simply asking children to try harder.

Before chasing the stopwatch, build the athlete behind it.

Book a Track & Field trial to see how your child runs and what they should develop next. Link in bio.
