Did you miss these Ram Leela details?

Even a decade later, the costumes from Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela remain a masterclass in visual storytelling. @anjumodi and @maximumbossy did not just create outfits. They curated a personality for each character.

Take the jeans Ranveer Singh wears. That small red and gold patch visible under the denim tear is an authentic textile sourced directly from Gujarat, exactly where the film is set. It is those tiny, grounded knickknacks that root the fantasy in a real place.

Then there is the styling of his shirts. Without the signature floral prints, Ram could have easily come across as too aggressive or hyper masculine. Those roses serve a double purpose. They make him feel playful and romantic while functioning as a subtle nod to the Romeo and Juliet inspiration behind the story.

Even his tattoos tell a story. Instead of generic ink, he sports his own initials inside a heart pierced with an arrow. It feels like an honest extension of a character who wears his heart on his sleeve.

It is rare to see costume design that feels this intentional. Every thread and pattern is working overtime to build the world of the film.

The Tragedy in Leela’s Outfit

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his incredible attention to detail, and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela is the perfect example. While the costumes designed by @anjumodi Modi and @maximumbossy are still iconic inspiration for Navratri fashion, every color and pattern tells a story.

Her final outfit is a masterclass in visual storytelling. The sleeves, split between black and red, perfectly illustrate a woman trapped between love and inevitable violence. The placement of the peacocks on the black fabric suggests that even the most beautiful romance was slowly being consumed by darkness.

The visual symmetry here is heartbreaking. Ram and Leela stand on opposite sides compared to their first meeting, signaling the end of their journey. As they choose to die together, hoping their sacrifice will end the blood feud between their families, the symbolism peaks.

Even in the final scene, the contrast continues. Their bodies are wrapped in red, while the surrounding crowd wears white. It suggests their love was the final spark needed to bring peace to their divided world.

Deepika’s Outfit Was Almost BLACK!

The iconic ivory aesthetic in Ram-Leela almost never happened. Sanjay Leela Bhansali originally filmed the sequence with Deepika Padukone in black, only to realize mid-production that ivory shifted the emotional tone entirely. It remains one of the most pivotal costume decisions in modern Bollywood history.

Cinema, movies, and film — all three mean the same, but signify different aspects of filmmaking, pointed out costume designer Maxima Basu, best known for her work in grand spectacles like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period war dramas Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat (2018) as well as grounded slice-of-life films like Anusha Rizvi’s 2010 black comedy satire Peepli Live and Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light (2024).

#SCREENAcademy: Award-winning costume designer Maxima Basu reveals the extraordinary lengths she went to create authenticity for Peepli Live.

From making Shalini Vatsa wear the same outfit for 30 days to not allowing her to wash her hair for a month, every detail was carefully planned to capture the character's real-life degradation.

Maxima also revealed how the costumes were washed in a village lake with minimal soap to naturally recreate the weathering required for the film.
