We recently announced the publication of our first-ever guide for students and emerging creatives interested in set design.

As part of it, we have put together a list of designers whose work we think is genuinely worth watching right now!

The designers featured are: Frankie Bradshaw, Hyemi Shin, Ana Inés Jabares-Pita, Marg Horwell, Jean Chan, Georgia Lowe, Paul Wills, Ben Stones, Max Jones, Grace Smart, Khadija Raza, Rose Revitt, Eleanor Bull, TK Hay, Anna Yates, Liam Bunster and Basia Bińkowska.

They span new writing, opera, musicals, and classical texts, and, between them, have worked across some of the most respected venues in the country.

These are up and coming designers, each with a distinct creative voice and a body of work that we find genuinely compelling.

Having built sets for productions designed by people at every level of the profession, we feel well placed to shine a light on the talent shaping the industry's future.

It’s a cross-section of the profession as we see it, and we hope it opens a few doors for emerging creatives who are still finding their way in.

52 people. 40 of whom were community volunteers, most had never been on a stage before. 12 open hearted, creative and dedicated professionals. A brilliant technical and creative team. Visionary producers. Unbelievably generous supporters. One unbelievable novel by a great, great novelist. And Bill Shankly. And this happened last night. And John Barnes came. Unbelievable. As in I can scarcely believe it. To everyone: “how far that little candle throws its beams, so shines a good deed in a naughty world…”.

First off I am chatting with Award Winning Theatre Set Designer Max Jones. 🎭
Recently I saw his set in the brilliant Ulster American with Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Louise Harland - so we of course discuss how he came up with the design , but also some other shows as he has worked at RSC, The Globe, Chichester Festival Theatre, Regents Park Open Air and The Old vic plus Associate Artist at Theatr Clywd to name just a few.
It’s interesting to hear how he encompasses a whole (and sometimes complex) design on to one stage and the process and people he collaborates with to get there. Also Max gives some expert advice on getting in to the industry and staying there.
